Route guidance by means of voice output, general
The route guidance through voice output function is an assistance function that assists the driver without distracting him from the traffic. The destination-oriented navigation of the navigation system is supported by voice outputs with the following information:
- Directional instructions
- Name of the next road to turn into
The voice output of the navigation system is performed in the selected system language. Special information on the voice output is issued in the following cases:
- Destination lies in area where driving is only possible to a limited extent
- Route via ferry
In vehicles without code (494) USA version, additional information is provided in the following instances:
- Destination lies in area where driving is not possible
- Route via toll road

Additional voice messages take place at the start of the route calculation, when an intermediate destination is reached, or when the destination is reached. For vehicles without code (494) USA version, for dynamic route guidance, additional voice messages are issued in response to routes influenced by traffic messages.
The COMAND controller unit is operated by the following components:
- With the control buttons on the COMAND controller unit
- Using the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Using the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Hands-free system microphone (A67b1) for the voice control system (VCS [SBS])
During an active voice output the volume of the announcement can be adjusted by the following components:
- With the volume control of the COMAND controller unit
- The + and - button for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group

Function sequence for route guidance through voice outputs
The navigation processor of the COMAND controller unit combines the word segments into complete instructions or information during a voice output and generates low frequency (LF) signals. The LF signals are forwarded, if necessary, via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system), where they are amplified and output via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left door tweeter (H4/1h1)
- Left door bass speaker (H4/1h2)
- Right door tweeter (H4/2h1)
- Right door bass speaker (H4/2h2)
- Center dashboard speaker (H4/27)
For vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the LF signals are amplified in the COMAND controller unit and output via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left door tweeter
- Left door bass speaker
- Right door tweeter
- Right door bass speaker
