The COMAND controller unit (A40/3) is the central control for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle.
On the COMAND controller unit with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or with code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer, the DVD drive is designed as a changer, i.e. between up to six CDs or DVDs can be selected.
The COMAND controller unit communicates over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) with the following control units:
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) control unit (N87/5) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio as of 1.6.2010)

The COMAND controller unit acts here as a gateway. It routes the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the MOST and thus forms the communications interface.
