Audio system, general
The following components are available for control of the audio system:
- Control buttons on the COMAND controller unit (A40/3)
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) (call basic menu and make settings)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) (volume, telephone functions)
- Handsfree system microphone (A67b1)
As of 1.6.2010 the corresponding information will be shown on the Audio/COMAND display during the operation of climate control functions, whereby the function bar is concealed.
The following basic functions can be controlled:

"RADIO" basic function
"RADIO" basic function can be called by pressing the "RADIO"function key. Pressing it several times enables you to switch between the following frequency bands:
- "FM"
- "AM"
When the "RADIO" basic function is called, the corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the audio/COMAND display (A40/8):
- Currently set frequency
- Current station from global positioning system (GPS) list (location specific) and memory location (if stored)
- Cursor, with which a different station can be selected.
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
The following audio sources can be selected in the application bar:
- "Radio" ("FM", "AM")
- "Disk"
- "Memory Card"
- "Music Register"
- "USB Storage" (as of 1.7.2011)
- "Media interface" (with code (518) Media interface)
- "Bluetooth Audio"

The various menu structures are made visible on the function bar depending on the audio source selected on the application bar.
In the function bar the following submenus can be called up depending on the frequency band selected in the application bar, and then various settings can be made:

The "DISC" basic function can be called by pressing the "DISC" function key. The corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the audio/COMAND display (readable data carrier inserted):
- Number of tracks on CD or DVD
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Artist (if present on CD or DVD)
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
The various menu structures are made visible on the function bar depending on the audio source selected on the application bar.
When an audio CD/DVD is inserted, the following submenus can be called in the function bar and various settings made:
- "CD" submenu ("Normal Track Sequence", "Random Tracks", "Gracenote Media Database")
- "REC" submenu (Record, audio files are copied as MP3 files onto the hard disk (into the Music Register))
- "Search" submenu (as of 1.7.2011) or "Tracks" (up to 30.6.2011)
- "Media" submenu (as of 1.7.2011) or "Medium" (up to 30.6.2011)
- "Sound" submenu ("Treble", "Bass", "Bal/Fad", "Logic7(R)" (with code (810) Sound system))
A track in the track list can be selected with the control buttons on the radio or on the audio/COMAND control panel. The playback position can be changed by pushing and holding the audio/ COMAND controller to the right (forward) or left (back).
When a MP3-CD/DVD is inserted, the following submenus can be called in the function bar and various settings made:
- "MP3" submenu ("Normal Track Sequence", "Random Tracks", "Random Folder", "Gracenote Media Database")
- "Search" submenu (as of 1.7.2011)
- "Folder" submenu (up to 30.6.2011 (Folder and track list on CD/DVD)
- "Media" or "Medium" submenu
- "Tone" submenu
When a memory card is inserted, the following submenus can be called in the function bar and various settings made:

If the "Music Register" data source is selected, the function bar can be used to call up the following submenus and enable various settings to be made:

If in vehicles as of 1.7.2011 a Universal Serial Bus (USB) memory stick is connected to the USB electrical connection (X115), then the following submenus can be called up in the function bar in the "USB memory" menu and various settings made:

"NAVI" basic function
The "NAVI" basic function can be called by pressing the "NAVI" function key. The corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the audio/COMAND display:
- Current location
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
The application bar and function bar are displayed only when the full screen mode on the audio/COMAND display is switched off.
This is activated through the Audio/COMAND control panel. The map data are preinstalled on the COMAND controller unit's hard disk. To update the map data, an update DVD must be installed by the customer or by a workshop. This process is permissible only when the vehicle is standing still.
The engine should be running to ensure that the on-board electrical system voltage does not run down.
After inserting the update DVD into the COMAND controller unit, a prompt automatically appears asking whether the data is to be installed. Installation of the Update DVD starts as soon as the prompt has been confirmed.
The installation of an update DVD takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes.
If the installation fails (spent on-board electrical system battery (G1), scratches or fingerprints on DVD), the existing database can still be used. The Update DVD can be removed after successful installation or if the installation is aborted.
A differentiation must be made between the following variants to operate the navigation system:

If the navigation base function (Navi) is activated, the basic display appears. Activating "Navi" again in the application bar causes the following submenus to be displayed:
- "Aspect" (map view) e.g. 2D alignment with north 2D alignment with destination, 3D, "3D Map Rotation"
- "Map style" (map depiction), e.g. "Expressway Facility", "Urban Expressway Map", "Guidance Display", "Satellite Map", "Memory Point Name"
- "VICS display" (display of traffic information using Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS)), e.g. "VICS public", "VICS Expressway", "Map of traffic jams", "Map of roads without traffic jams", "Restriction Info"
- "POI display" (display of points of interest on map), e.g. Mercedes-Benz Service, gas stations, hide points of interests
- "Settings", e.g. Dynamic route guidance (use traffic statistics, announce before entering, before RR crossings, before curves, before departing prefecture), VICS settings, Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) settings, avoid options, learn route, fuel low, version display for map or ETC, read out position

Special features
- Destination entry:
A destination ca be entered using routes or geographical coordinates. It is not possible to define intermediate stops, however, up to 4 way points can be entered.
- Traffic information:
The Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) is used.
- Position:
One vehicle position can be saved as "Home" and three vehicle positions as favorites. The functions "Map to destination" and "Map intermediate stop" are not available.

The "TEL" basic function can be called by pressing the "TEL" function key and allows operation of the vehicle telephone system.

The following information appears on the audio/COMAND display:
- Name of currently connected mobile phone
- Field strength of mobile telephone network
- Handset symbol
- Speller with characters for entering telephone numbers
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
The address book is not a temporary creation. The entries remain stored in the COMAND controller unit when the mobile phone is removed and can still be dialed.
A telephone connection can be completed as follows:
- Entry of telephone number
- Selection of telephone book entries
- Selection of telephone numbers from call list
Incoming calls are signaled visually on the audio/COMAND display as well as acoustically.

Basic Internet access function ("Globe") (as of 1.7.2011)
After activating the function through the "Globe" symbol in the Audio/COMAND display application bar, the telephone provider has to be specified first (selection through country-specific lists or free entry through the character bar on the Audio/COMAND display).
Operation is performed through the Audio/COMAND control panel; for text entries the character bar on the Audio/COMAND display is also used.
The services grouped under "COMAND Online" such as "Search for POIs", "Weather", "Load POIs or routes" (including during a journey) as well as freely surfing the Internet (in stationary vehicle).
When using the services, the "Back" button (A40/9s2) of the Audio/ COMAND control panel takes you back to the service start page, or when surfing the Internet back to the last page viewed.
For free surfing the cursor can be moved by moving the audio/ COMAND controller (A40/9s11) on the audio/COMAND control panel. The selection menu can be opened or a marked object called up during free surfing of the Internet by pressing the audio/ COMAND controller (vertically downwards). Turning the rotary actuator on the Audio/COMAND control panel enables one to jump on the current page from a selectable object (e.g. link) to the next one, the object is then highlighted.
