Audio system, general
The following components are available in combination with the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) for operation of the audio system:
- Control buttons on the COMAND controller unit (A40/3)
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Hands-free system microphone (A67b1) (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation))
As of 1.6.2010, information will be shown on the Audio/ COMAND display during the operation of climate control functions, whereby the function bar is concealed.
The menu item "TA" (Traffic Announcement) is not available with code (494) USA version.

"RADIO" basic function
The "RADIO" basic function is called up by pressing the "RADIO" function key. When pressed more than once, it switches between the frequency bands listed below.

Vehicles with code (494) USA version:

When the "RADIO" basic function is called, the corresponding basic mask appears.
The following information appears on the Audio/COMAND display:
- Stations currently receivable and their memory locations (station name with radio data system (RDS) or frequency)
- Cursor, with which a different station can be selected.
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
The following audio sources can be selected in the application bar:
- "Radio"
- "Disk"
- "Memory card"
- "Music Register"
- "Bluetooth audio" (as of 1.7.2011)

"Fix frequency" (for FM or DAB radio reception) enables a set station to be held. Another alternative frequency is not switched to in the event of poor reception.

)"DISC" basic function
The "DISC" basic function can be called by pressing the "DISC" function key. The corresponding basic mask appears. The following information is shown on the Audio/COMAND display (readable data medium inserted):
- Number of tracks on CD or DVD
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Artist (if present on CD or DVD)
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
The various menu structures are made visible on the function bar depending on the audio source selected on the application bar.
When an audio CD/DVD is inserted, the following submenus can be called in the function bar and various settings made:
- "CD" submenu ("Normal Track Sequence", "Track List Mix" or "Track Mix", "TA", "Gracenote Media Database")
- "Search" submenu (as of 1.7.2011)
- "Track list" submenu (up to 30.6.2011) (CD or DVD track list)
- "Media" submenu (List of audio sources and with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer plus the 6 media in changer)
- "Sound" submenu ("Treble", "Bass", "Bal/Fad", "Logic7(R)" (with code (810) Sound system))
A track in the track list can be selected with the control buttons on the radio or on the audio/COMAND control panel. The playback position can be changed by pushing and holding the audio/ COMAND controller to the right (forward) or left (back).
When an MP3-CD or DVD is inserted, the following submenus can be called up in the function bar and various settings made:
- "MP3" submenu ("Normal Track Sequence", "Track List Mix" or "Track Mix", "Folder Mix", "Display Track Information" (as of 1.7.2011), "TA")
- "Search" submenu (as of 1.7.2011)

When a memory card is inserted, the following submenus can be called in the function bar and various settings made:
- "MP3" submenu ("Normal Track Sequence", "Track List Mix" or "Track Mix", "Folder Mix", "Display Track Information" (as of 1.7.2011), "TA")
- "Search" submenu (as of 1.7.2011)

On vehicles as of 1.7.2011 the card reader in the COMAND controller unit is compatible with Secure Digital (SD) memory cards and in vehicles up to 30.6.2011 for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) memory cards.
If the "Music Register" data source is selected, the function bar can be used to call up the following submenus and enable various settings to be made:
- "Music Register" submenu ("Normal Track Sequence", "Folder Mix", "Track List Mix" or "Track Mix","Copy MP3 Music Files", "Rename/Delete Files" (as of 1.7.2011), "Delete All Music Files", "Memory Info", "Display Track Information" (as of 1.7.2011), "TA")

- "Folder" submenu (up to 30.6.2011)

When "Bluetooth audio" is selected as the data source, the following submenus can be selected in the function bar and various settings made.
- "BT Audio" submenu ("Bluetooth Audio Device List", "TA")

If the "Media Interface" data source is selected (with code (518) Media interface) the following list of submenus can be called up on the function bar, and various settings made.
The menu content is dependent on the device connected (iPod, Universal Serial Bus (USB) or AUX).
If an "iPod" is connected:
- "Media Interface" submenu ("Normal Track Sequence", "Track List Mix" or "Track Mix", "Category Mix", "TA")
- "Search" submenu (as of 1.7.2011)

As of 1.6.2010, "Standard" or "Boost" can be selected in the "Volume" menu for the "AUX" audio source. When "Boost" is selected, the input level for the audio signal volume is raised.
Further operation is performed on the AUX device itself.
If in vehicles as of 1.7.2011 a USB memory stick is connected to the USB electrical connection (X115), then the following submenus can be called up in the function bar in the "USB memory" menu and various settings made:
- "MP3" submenu ("Selective Active Partition", "Normal Track Sequence", "Track List Mix", "Folder Mix", "Display Track Information", "TA")
- "Search" submenu
- "Media" submenu
- "Tone" submenu

Base function "Video"
When the "Video" menu is selected in the application bar, the following basic mask appears and the last video application active is started.
The following video applications can be selected:
- "TV" (with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner )
- "DVD-V"
- "AUX"
The TV tuner (analog/digital) (A90/1) is designed for the reception of analog terrestrial TV stations of all standards and digital TV stations according to the DVB-T standard. If reception deteriorates, it switches automatically to alternative stations that have a better reception or to digital or analog broadcasts with the same program content, as soon as an appropriate station is available.
In TV mode, the following submenus in the function bar can be called up and various settings made:
- "TV" submenu ("Station List", "Channel Entry", "Brightness", "Contrast", "Color", "16:9 optimized", "4:3", "Widescreen", "Channel Fix", "TV Standard")
- "Memory" submenu ("Auto Memory", "Stored Stations")
- "Info" submenu (digital stations only) (shows supplemental information transmitted by stations)
- "Videotext" submenu (Activate Videotext) ("TV Screen", "Page", "<<" or ">>", "Stop")
- "Media" submenu
- "Tone" submenu
In DVD mode, the following submenus in the function bar can be called and various settings made:
- "DVD V" submenu ("DVD Functions" (menu stored on DVD), "Brightness", "Contrast", "Color", "16:9 Optimized", "4:3", "Widescreen")
- "Pause playback" submenu
- "Stop playback" submenu
- "Media" submenu

In AUX mode, the following submenus in the function bar can be called up and various settings made:

Basic function "NAVI" (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer)
The "NAVI" basic function can be called by pressing the "NAVI" function key. The corresponding basic mask appears. The current location as well as application and function lines are shown on the audio/COMAND display.
The application and function bars are not shown on the Audio/ COMAND display in the full-screen mode. The full-screen mode can be activated via the audio/COMAND control panel.
A differentiation must be made when operating the navigation system:

Traffic Message Channel (TMC) or TMC Pro and the "Dynamic Route" and "Avoid Toll Sticker Roads" settings are not available with code (494) USA version.

"Navi" menu in the application bar as of 1.7.2011
In the "Navi" menu, the following submenus can be called up and various settings made:
- "Route settings" (e.g. fast, dynamic, ECO (as of 1.6.2010) or short route; freeways, toll roads, tunnels, ferries, motorails or avoid toll sticker roads)
- "Map Settings" (e.g. map orientation, POI symbols on map, text information on map, speed limits on map, topographical map, freeway information, city model, next crossroads, compass on map)
- "Personal points of interest"
- "Automatically Read Out Traffic Announcements"
- "Announce street names"
- "Audio lowering"
- "Calculate Alternative Route"
- "Avoid area", (e.g. via map, from memory, from personal points of interest)
- "Map version"

"Navi" menu in the application bar up to 30.6.2011
The following submenus can be called in the application bar:
- "Map depiction" (north alignment, alignment relative to direction of travel, birds' eye perspective, standard symbols, customized symbols, no symbols)
- "Mode" (Short route, dynamic route, fast route; freeways, toll roads, tunnels, avoid ferries or motorails, avoid toll sticker roads")
- "Block area"
- "Text information on map" (arrival time/distance, current road, geographical coordinates, none)
- "Freeway information"
- "Automatically read out TMC messages"
- "Audio lowering"

Menus in the function bar
In the function bar, the following submenus can be called and various settings made:
- Submenu "Guide" (back, previous, next, details, Start)
- "TMC" submenu (TMC or TMC Pro symbol information, TMC Pro as of 1.6.09)
- "Route" submenu (with route guidance active) (traffic jam ahead, destination information, route browser)
- "Position" submenu (Save vehicle position, map on vehicle position, map on destination, map on intermediate stop/destinations and as of 1.7.2011: Compass)
- "Destination" submenu (Continue/cancel route guidance, address entry, from memory, from last destinations, from POIs, via map, intermediate stop, save destination and as of 1.7.2011: Waypoints, routes, via geo coordinates)
The current navigation announcement can be called by selecting the ear pictogram (without code (494) USA version) or the text field "RPT" (with code (494) USA version).
When the navigation is not active, a list of all available TMC or TMC Pro messages appears (without code (494) USA version).


)"TEL" basic function
The "TEL" basic function can be called by pressing the "TEL" function key and allows operation of the vehicle telephone system.
When the "TEL" basic function is called, the corresponding basic mask appears.
A telephone connection can be completed as follows:
- Entry of telephone number
- Selection of telephone numbers from entries or lists
- Acceptance of incoming call
Incoming calls are signaled visually on the Audio/COMAND display as well as acoustically.
The following information appears on the Audio/COMAND display:
- Name of currently connected mobile phone
- Field strength of mobile telephone network
- Handset symbol
- Character bar, for entering phone numbers
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
In the application bar, the following submenus can be called and various settings made:
- "Telephone" menu
- "Address book" menu (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation))
In the function bar, the following submenus can be called and various settings made:

The "SMS" submenu (up to 30.6.2011 with code (386) Comfort telephony) is also available as of 1.7.2011 for basic telephony, if the mobile phone supports the Message Access Profile (MAP).
The phone book is called up after the basic telephone function is activated in the application field through the "Name" menu. The entry "MB contact" appears in the first space; all other phone book entries are listed alphabetically.
The telephone book is an excerpt of entries from the address book which contains at least one telephone number.
The address book is activated in the Telephone menu's application bar. The following submenus can be called up and various settings made:
- "Address book" submenu ("Import Contacts", "Delete Contacts")
- "Search"
- "New"
- "Delete"
The address book is not a temporary creation. The entries remain stored in the COMAND controller unit when the mobile phone is removed and can still be dialed.

"SYS" basic function
The "SYS" basic function can be called by pressing the "SYS"function key. The corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the Audio/COMAND display:
- Symbol for basic "SYS" menu (up to 30.6.2011) or analog clock (as of 1.7.2011)
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
The "SYS" basic function can also be selected in the application bar.
In vehicles as of 1.7.2011, the following submenus can be called up in the function bar and various settings made:
- "Settings" submenu

Fuel mileage display (as of 1.7.2011):
When the system menu item is activated, an analog clock is shown on the Audio/COMAND display. When the audio/ COMAND control panel is turned or pushed to the left or right, the display changes from clock to fuel mileage. The fuel mileage display shows the fuel mileage for the last 15 min. in the form a beam diagram.
In vehicles up to 30.6.2011, the following submenus can be called up in the function bar and various settings made:

Basic Internet access ("Globe") (as of 1.7.2011 except code (494) USA version, for code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer)
After activating the function through the "Globe" symbol in the Audio/COMAND display application bar, the telephone provider has to be specified first (selection through country-specific lists or free entry through the character bar on the Audio/COMAND display).
Operation is performed through the Audio/COMAND control panel; for text entries the character bar on the Audio/COMAND display is also used.
The services grouped under "COMAND Online" such as "Search for POIs", "Weather", "Load POIs or routes" (including during a journey) as well as freely surfing the Internet (in stationary vehicle).
When using the services, the "Back" button (A40/9s2) of the Audio/ COMAND control panel takes you back to the service start page, or when surfing the Internet back to the last page viewed.
For free surfing the cursor can be moved by moving the audio/ COMAND controller (A40/9s11) on the audio/COMAND control panel. The selection menu can be opened or a marked object called up during free surfing of the Internet by pressing the audio/ COMAND controller (vertically downwards). Turning the rotary actuator on the Audio/COMAND control panel enables one to jump on the current page from a selectable object (e.g. link) to the next one, the object is then highlighted.
