GF82.60-P-2020CA Media Interface Function

GF82.60-P-2020CA Media Interface Function
MODEL 207.3 /4
- with CODE (518) Media interface

Function requirements, general
^ Circuit 30g ON
^ Audio equipment switched on

Media interface, general
The media interface function is also called "Universal Consumer Electronic Interface". The media interface allows portable terminals to be connected to the audio equipment using an adapter cable, the media interface electrical connector (X18/70), the media interface control unit (N125/1) and the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).
The media interface electrical connector is located in the glove compartment up to 31.5.2011 and in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the center armrest as of 1.6.2011.
The following portable terminals can be connected via the media interface with an adapter cable:
- AUX unit (class 1) (e.g. MP3-player)
- iPod or serial universal serial bus (USB) devices (Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)) (class 2)
- Special USB devices (mass storage device) (class 3)
The following data formats are supported:
- MP3 (up to 320 kbit/s)
- Windows Media Audio (up to 320 kbit/s)
The AUX electrical connector (X39/45) (in the glove compartment up to 31.5.2011 and in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the center armrest as of 1.6.2011) is discontinued. AUX devices without an operating facility are connected to the AUX connection. "iPods" can be connected to the "iPod" connector. USB devices are connected to the USB connector.
Media Transfer Protocol (Class 2) devices are connected to the USB connector and the AUX connector.
In vehicles as of 1.7.2011 with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer:
If an attempt is made to connect a USB memory stick to the media interface electrical connector via the adapter cable, the message "Note: Please connect the device to the other USB port" appears on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8). The USB electrical connector (X115) for connecting USB memory sticks is also located in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the center armrest.
The portable terminal (except AUX devices) is operated via the menu guidance in the audio equipment, which can be operated via one of the following controls:
- Buttons on audio unit
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
Menu guidance is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) and is dependent on the portable terminal connected.
As of 1.6.2010: With the audio source "Aux" (via media interface adapter cable), the selections "Standard" and "Boost" are possible in the "Volume" menu. The input level can be increased by selecting "Boost".
If the audio equipment does not support the connected portable terminal, the portable terminal is deeply discharged or the media interface electrical connector is defective, a corresponding message is output via the Audio/COMAND display.
The user can now have the audio data displayed by selecting the relevant submenu, e.g.:
- "Media interface" menu
- "Playlists" submenu
- "Artists" submenu
- "Albums" submenu
- "Genres" or "Audiobooks" submenu
In vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer without code (218)
Reversing camera and in vehicles with code (498) Japan version, video data can also be processed and displayed.

Function sequence for media interface
The media interface control unit recognizes portable terminals (only "iPod" and USB) when switched on and transmits a signal to the audio equipment which causes switch-over to the connected source.
If the audio equipment is switched off, it is not activated when a portable terminal is connected via the media interface system.
Selection of the "Media interface" menu item and the specific submenus is possible using one of the following controls:
- Buttons on audio unit
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
The control signals from the buttons on the "Audio equipment" are processed internally.
The settings are transmitted over the audio/COMAND control panel to the audio equipment via the telematics CAN (CAN A).
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "audio unit" via the following route:
- Steering wheel electronics (N135)
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Instrument cluster (A1)
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
After the audio equipment has processed the control signals, it transmits the corresponding requests to the portable device over the following path:
- MOST
- Media interface control unit
- Media interface electrical connector
- Adapter cable
The portable device connected evaluates the requests and sends the corresponding audio signals and data to the "Audio equipment" via the following route:
- Adapter cable
- Media interface electrical connector
- Media interface control unit
- MOST
The video signals are transmitted by the media interface electrical connector to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) via a coaxial cable (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer).
The video signals are then processed internally by the COMAND controller unit and transmitted to the Audio/COMAND display via a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line. on vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment transmits audio signals via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3). The sound system amplifier control unit processes the signals and relays them for output via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Door tweeter
- Door bass speaker
- Rear tweeter
- Rear bass speaker
- Center instrument panel speaker (H4/27)
- Rear shelf bass speaker (H4/29)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)
On vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the audio signals are output directly by the audio equipment to the following speakers:
- Left door tweeter (H4/1h1)
- Left door bass speaker (H4/1h2)
- Right door tweeter (H4/2h1)
- Right door bass speaker (H4/2h2)
- Left rear tweeter (H4/3h1)
- Left rear bass speaker (H4/3h2)
- Right rear tweeter (H4/4h1)
- Right rear bass speaker (H4/4h2)
