Complaint:
Fault message in instrument cluster on engine start "Power Steering Malfunction, Service Required". Steering power assistance is off.

The following fault codes (DTCs) and KFC numbers (internal codes) are stored in the control unit of the electric power steering (N68).

The KFC numbers are listed in the control unit log for the electric power steering (N68) (see example in attachment).

Cause:
If the steering is operated during the starting procedure with a low battery charge level, the control unit monitor function can interpret this as implausible and signal a malfunction.

Remedy:
Model series 218

1. Perform XENTRY DIAGNOSTICS update with add-on

- For Xentry Diagnostics DVD 11/2011 use add-on number 2173.

- For Xentry Diagnostics DVD 01/2012 use add-on number 2174.

2. Perform software update of electric power steering (N68)
