General
The breakdown assistance function enables the customer to, e.g. make contact with the CAC in the event of a problem with the vehicle. The CAC can then perform remote diagnosis for the actual situation and initiate effective help measures, taking into consideration further vehicle-specific data.
The breakdown assistance function consists of the two following subfunctions:
^ Breakdown assistance function sequence
^ Function sequence for display of additional services

Breakdown assistance function sequence
The breakdown assistance button is read in directly by the emergency call system control unit via a discrete line. The emergency call system control unit automatically transmits an SMS with the following data to the CAC via the communication module integrated into the emergency call system control unit:
^ Vehicle position
^ Customer identification data
^ Vehicle identification data
^ Condition data

A voice connection to the CAC is also set up via the communication module integrated into the emergency call system control unit.
The communication module integrated into the emergency call system control unit transmits and receives the mobile phone signals or data in the following way:
^ Discrete line
^ Frequency switchover control unit (N96), with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/ Canada
^ Discrete line
^ Multifunction antenna (A28/11)

The light emitting diode (LED) integrated into the breakdown assistance button flashes as long as the breakdown assistance is active.

In the event of a breakdown assistance event, other vehicle- related services (e.g. MB-Info call) and, for vehicles with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/Canada, active mobile phone connections are interrupted.

In the event of a malfunction in the multifunction antenna (e.g. defective because of a rollover), the communication module integrated into the emergency call system control unit automatically sends and receives the mobile phone signals and data via the emergency call system antenna (A2/52).

Function sequence for display of additional services
Also available are the following services which are shown on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8):
^ Destination Feed In (transmission of destinations which can then be actuated using the navigation system), with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer
^ Freetext (transmission of text messages)

The other services, e.g. Freetext (transmission of text messages), are sent to the Audio/COMAND display by the emergency call system control unit in the following way:
^ Diagnostic CAN
^ Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1)
^ Interior CAN
^ "Master control unit"
^ Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) line
