General
The audio unit is the center control panel for the entertainment and communications systems integrated in the vehicle.

For vehicles with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer, the audio unit's CD/DVD drive is designed as a changer, i.e. you can choose from up to six CDs or DVDs.

The audio unit contains the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:
- Audio mode, function
- Disc changer function (with code 510) Audio 20 with CD changer or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer)
- Video mode, function
- TV operation, function (with code (865) TV tuner)
- Media interface function (with code (518) Media interface)
- Internet connection function (with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, except code (494) USA version, or with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation))
- Navigation function (with code (509) Navigation box)
- Navigation function (with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer or with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation); with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer or with code (525) Radio MB Audio 50 APS)
- Mobile phone system, function
- Voice control function (with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer or with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation); with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer)
- Emergency call system function (with code (359) TELE AID emergency call system)
- Electronic Toll Collection function (with code (498) Japan version)

The displays and menu displays for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the audio unit (except during navigation mode with code (509) Navigation box). Display and menu display with code (509) Navigation box are not generated in the audio unit, but in the navigation module (A2/30) itself and they deviate from the standard display.

The following applications can also be shown in the instrument cluster (A1):

The audio equipment communicates via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) with the following control units (except on vehicles with code (523) Radio MB Audio 20 and except code (494) USA version):
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Satellite digital audio radio control unit(SDAR) (N87/5) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio, except with COMAND controller unit (A40/3) as of 1.6.2009 up to 31.5.2010)
- SDAR/high definition tuner control unit (N87/8) (with COMAND controller unit (A40/3) as of 1.6.2009 up to 31.5.2010)
- TV digital tuner (A90/3) (with code (865) TV tuner)
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)

The audio unit acts as a gateway. It routes the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the MOST and thus forms the communications interface.
