Activating the overall system
Inserting the transmitter key (A8/1) into the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) and setting it to position 0 (circuit 15C) activates all data bus systems, to enable a faster switch-on sequence to be achieved. When the transmitter key is turned to position 1 (circuit 15R ON), the audio/COMAND display (A40/8) is switched on, insofar as the latter was switched on before the transmitter key was removed for the last time. The system which was active before it was last switched off (e.g. radio) is switched on and the corresponding basic menu is displayed. If the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) was switched off for more than t = 30 min, then a message appears at first with general information about how to use the system.
Conduct when pushing "ON" button
The COMAND controller unit and the audio/COMAND display can still be switched on even when the transmitter key has been removed by pressing the "ON" button. All functions are then available for t = 30 minutes
After this, the COMAND controller unit switches off automatically.
Switch-off characteristics
The COMAND controller unit is switched off when the transmitter key is removed (circuit 15C OFF). The run-on time of t = 30 min (standby) of the navigation system starts. During the run-on time, all the important localizing parameters remain stored.
The run-on time of the audio systems can be set; this is done during the installation of the COMAND controller unit in the plant. When not switched on, the COMAND controller unit is always in "standby" mode when the interior CAN is active.
Switch off characteristics at undervoltage
If the on-board electrical system battery (G1) drops below its specified level, a message is shown in the audio/COMAND display requesting that the engine be started. If the engine is not started, then after t = 3 min another warning is issued stating that 10 s remain for switching on the engine after which the system will then shut down.
If the system has shut off and the on-board power supply rises again, the COMAND controller unit does not switch itself on again automatically. The system can be switched on again manually. The warning procedure then runs again, until the cause for the undervoltage is rectified.
Switch off behavior (run-on mode) when the destination has not been reached
If the destination of the route guidance has not been reached, the navigation system in the COMAND controller unit acts as follows when the engine is shut off:
^ Navigation remains active up to t = 30 min (e.g. refueling stop). Navigation continues from where it left off after restarting the vehicle.
^ After t = 30 min up to a maximum of t = 2 h, the COMAND controller unit remains in "Sleep mode". The route is recalculated after restarting the vehicle and the navigation continued.
^ After t = 2 h, a request is displayed when the vehicle is restarted asking if the route is to be calculated again.
"YES" = Route is calculated again.
"NO" = Navigation will cease.
