Component Identification:

Location
The multifunction steering wheel is located on the driver side and is bolted to the steering column.

Task
The multifunction steering wheel serves for increasing the active driving safety in road traffic in combination with the instrument cluster (A1). This means that the driver can concentrate on the traffic without distraction when operating various vehicle components such as radio and telephone.
The multifunction steering wheel allows the driver to operate and query all multimedia services (e.g. radio, navigation).

Furthermore, for vehicles with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles, the individual forward gears can be engaged directly using the gear shifter PLUS and gear shifter MINUS in the manual shift program "M".

The information about various requests is read in by the steering column tube module via the local interconnect network (LIN) and made available to other control units via the engine compartment CAN and interior CAN (CAN B).
The switch and controls illumination at the multifunction steering wheel is also actuated via the steering column tube module and LIN.

The fanfare horn buttons are located on each side below the impact absorber or the airbag unit and they are actuated by pressing the respective side of the impact absorber.
