Function requirements, general
^ Circuit 30g ON
^ A mobile telephone network available in adequate strength and quality
^ Compatible mobile phone connected via the Japan adapter cable electrical connector (X39/46) to the communications control unit (N123/6) or Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone in the vehicle and authorized (not connected to the adapter cable electrical connector)
The mobile phone used must support the hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. The mobile phones that meet these requirements are listed at http://www.mercedes-benz.com/connect
Only read access is available to the phone book of a mobile mobile phone are always imported into the address book of the mobile phone system.

Placing/ending phone call, general
The following components are available for operating the mobile phone system:
- Control buttons on the mobile phone
- Function keys and keypad on the COMAND controller unit (A40/3)
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
Telephone calls can be made in handsfree mode or "Private Mode". In handsfree mode, audio output takes place via the speaker system of the vehicle. Currently active audio sources are muted (MUTE).
On vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the corresponding audio signals are output over the following speakers:
- Left door tweeter (H4/1h1)
- Left door bass speaker (H4/1h2)
- Right door tweeter (H4/2h1)
- Right door bass speaker (H4/2h2)
On vehicles with code (810) Sound system the COMAND control unit transmits the audio signals via media-oriented system transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3), which amplifies and output them over the following speakers:
- Door tweeter
- Door bass speaker
- Rear tweeter
- Rear bass speaker
- Center dashboard speaker (H4/27)
In "Private Mode" the user makes a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the telephone conversation. "Private Mode" is activated if the mobile phone is disconnected from the adapter cable electrical connector.
After the call has been successfully established, the mobile phone receives the mobile phone signals via the following route:
- Multifunction antenna (A28/11)
- Direct line
- Adapter cable electrical connector
The "Set up and terminate telephone call" function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Call setup function sequence
^ Call termination function sequence

The function sequences are described using a mobile phone connected to the adapter cable electrical connector as an example.
Deviations to this are identified in the following text by the symbol.

Call setup function sequence
A telephone connection is set up by entering or selecting a phone number and then dialing.
The telephone number can be entered or selected as follows:
- Manual input or voice input via VCS [SBS]
- Selection from call list
- Selection from address book
A telephone number can be entered as follows:
- Control buttons on the mobile phone
- Keypad on the COMAND controller unit
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Voice input via VCS [SBS]
When entries are made via the control buttons on the mobile phone, the control signals are processed internally by the mobile phone.
When entries are made via the keypad on the COMAND controller unit, the control signals are processed by the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Communication control unit
- Direct line
- Adapter cable electrical connector
On a Bluetooth-operated mobile phone, communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
To enter the telephone number via the Audio/COMAND control panel, the "TEL" base function must be started. The "TEL" basic function is called up by pressing the "TEL" function key on the COMAND controller unit. The corresponding basic mask appears.
The "TEL" base function can also be called up via the "TEL" menu in the application bar.
The telephone number can now be entered or selected as follows:
- Manual entry via the Speller that is provided in the audio/ COMAND display (A40/8)
- Selection from call list, submenu "List"
- Selection from address book, submenu "Address book"
The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via the telematics CAN (CAN A).
The COMAND controller unit forwards the control signals to the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Communication control unit
- Direct line
- Adapter cable electrical connector
On a Bluetooth-operated mobile phone, communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
The address book can also be selected by pressing the system selection (S110s3) button via the "Tel" menu in the instrument cluster (A1).
The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back using the scroll forward/back button (S110s1).
The telephone call is set up by pressing the accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3).
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are transferred to the COMAND controller unit via the following route:
- Steering wheel electronics (N135)
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
- COMAND control unit
The data that is required for displaying in the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster is transmitted by the COMAND controller unit to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.
On a mobile phone operated via Bluetooth(R), communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
The voice input via VCS [SBS] function is activated by pressing the voice control system ON button (S111s4). A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.
Now the telephone number can be spoken or selected from the address book or the call list.
The control system of the voice control system ON button is forwarded as follows to the COMAND controller unit:
- Steering wheel electronics
- Steering LIN
- Steering column module control unit
- Chassis CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
The setup of the call is activated in the dialogue using voice commands. The voice commands are recorded by the handsfree system microphone (A67b1) and forwarded via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit. The voice commands are then forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Communication control unit
- Direct line
- Adapter cable electrical connector
On a mobile phone operated via Bluetooth(R), communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna

Call termination function sequence
The phone call can be terminated as follows:
- Terminate via control buttons on mobile phone
- Terminate via function keys on the COMAND controller unit
- Terminate via audio/COMAND control panel
- Terminate via multifunction steering wheel button groups
Pressing the "Hang up" control button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call. The control signal of the "Hang up" control button is processed internally by the mobile phone.
Pressing the "Hang up" function key on the COMAND controller unit terminates the telephone call. The control signal of the "Hang up" function key is processed internally by the COMAND controller unit.
The COMAND controller unit sends the control signal of the "Hang up" function key to the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Communication control unit
- Direct line
- Adapter cable electrical connector
On a mobile phone operated via Bluetooth(R), communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
The phone call is terminated by selecting the "Terminate call" pictogram and then confirming via the audio/COMAND control panel. The relevant control signals are transmitted to the COMAND controller unit by the audio/COMAND control panel via the telematics CAN. The COMAND controller unit forwards these to the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Communication control unit
- Direct line
- Adapter cable electrical connector
On a mobile phone operated via Bluetooth(R), communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
Pressing the button on the accept/terminate phone call button on the multifunction steering wheel terminates a phone call. The control signal of the right multifunction steering wheel button group is forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via the following route:
- Steering wheel electronics
- Steering LIN
- Steering column module control unit
- Chassis CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
The control signals are routed by the COMAND controller unit to the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Communication control unit
- Direct line
- Adapter cable electrical connector
On a mobile phone operated via Bluetooth(R), communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the mobile phone via the following route:
