Oil supply for transfer case 4MATIC, general information
The oil supply system ensures that the transfer case components are supplied with sufficient oil.

The integrated design means that the distributor and automatic transmission have a common oil system.

Oil supply for transfer cage 4MATIC. function sequence
A separate oil feed on the housing of the automatic transmission enables oil to be routed through the oil return from the transmission cooler to the transfer case. In doing so, the oil feed is limited by a restrictor in the oil line connector to approx. 100 ml/min.

An oil sump is formed in the lateral output chamber, and its oil level is regulated constantly to max. 700 ml. If, when the vehicle is at a standstill, the oil level rises above 700 ml, the oil then flows via the central tapered roller bearing into the automatic transmission.

When driving the oil is catapulted out of the lateral output chamber by the rotation of the helically geared spur gears, and into the top of the transfer case's ram chamber.

The oil is accumulated here and routed over the through-bore on the base of the ram chamber and back into the lateral output chamber.

This principle enables the oil sump to be kept as small as possible during automotive operation, to prevent any oil burbling.

If the oil level in the ram chamber rises above the max. level of 700 ml, the oil then flows over an oil return hole to the automatic transmission.

The oil supply of the planetary gear differential is assured through two bores located between the lateral output chamber and the planetary gear group chamber.
