General
The radio (A2) is the central operating unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle. With the radio with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer, the CD drive is designed as a changer, i.e. a selection can be made between up to 6 CDs.

A separate function description exists for the mobile phone function and is therefore not described here.

The audio system consists of the following subfunctions which are described in separate documents:
^ Audio mode, function
^ DVD changer function

^ Volume/tone settings function
^ Media interface function (with code (518)
^ Media Interface) Digital audio broadcasting (DAB), function
(with code (537) Digital radio)

The displays and menu displays for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the radio.
The radio, with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer, communicates with the following control units via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST):

- Media interface control unit (N125/1)

- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3)
(with code (537) Digital radio)
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3)
(with code (810) Sound system)

The radio, with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer, functions as a gateway (communications interface). It routes the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the MOST.

For vehicles with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio a MOST is not For vehicles with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio used. The radio acts as a gateway. It routes the signals from the interior CAN to the components of the telematics CAN.

The control signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) are read in by the steering wheel electronics (N135) and sent over the steering LIN (LIN E1) to the steering column tube module control unit (N80). The steering column tube module control unit forwards the signals via the chassis CAN (CAN E) to the instrument cluster (A1) and from there via the interior CAN to the radio.

The system can be operated using the following controls:
- Control buttons on the radio
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
