Component Identification:
Location
The sound system amplifier control unit is located on a bracket in the trunk on the left sidewall behind the paneling.
Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio (A2) (with code (510) Audio 20 incl. CD changer or with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio)
- Radio with Auto pilot system (A2/56) (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer or code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio)
- COMAND controller unit (A40/3) (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation), with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or with code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
Task
^ Receive signals
^ Decoding signals
^ Supporting and amplifying signals
^ Transmitting signals
Receive signals
^ Direct lines
^ Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
Direct lines
- Power supply via circuit 31 and circuit 30g using one direct line each
- Audio muting (with code (359) TELE AID emergency call system)
- Visual and electrical wake-up
MOST
The sound system amplifier control system is a subscriber of the MOST and receives, for example, the Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP) copy-protected audio signals from the following components:
- "Audio equipment"
- TV tuner (analog/digital) (A90/1) (with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner)
- TV digital tuner (A90/3) (with code (498) Japan version)
- SDAR control unit / High definition tuner (N87/8) (with code 536) SIRIUS satellite radio)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
Decoding signals
- Decoding DTCP copy-protected audio signals on basis of latest Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology
DSP means that for the audio range, audio tracks are processed using mathematical algorithms with the objective of improving the acoustic sound characteristics.
Supporting and amplifying signals
- Surround sound (Logic 7) support
- Supports two stereo entertainment channels and three announcement channels (e.g. for voice output of navigation instructions, etc.)
- Amplification of decoded audio signals
Transmitting signals
Direct lines
- Line out (+ and -) for rear bass speaker amplifier (N40/9)
- Remote for rear bass speaker amplifier
- Output of signals (BEEPs), digital multiple channel output and output of decoded, volume-adapted and amplified audio signals to the following speakers:
- Bass speaker (H4/17) (model 212.0)
- Center instrument panel speaker (H4/27)
- Bass speaker (H4/29) (model 212.2)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/55) (model 212.2)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57) (model 212.0)
- Left front door sound system tweeter (H4/68)
- Right front door sound system tweeter (H4/69)
- Left rear door sound system tweeter (H4/70)
- Right rear door sound system tweeter (H4/71)
- Left front door sound system midrange and bass speaker (H4/72)
- Right front door sound system midrange and bass speaker (H4/73)
- Left rear door sound system midrange speaker (H4/80)
- Right rear door sound system midrange speaker (H4/81)
Function
The sound system amplifier control unit is activated via the "audio equipment". The "Audio unit" provides all menus for user guidance. Moreover, the following subfunctions are available:
^ Diagnosis
^ Software download
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of the sound system amplifier control unit is performed using the Keyword 2000 protocol. All other control units in MOST are also diagnosed via this interface at the same time.
Software download
The update is conducted using the DVD drive of the "audio equipment" with a CD or a DVD.
