These operating instructions consist of the following subfunctions:

Switching on
The rear entertainment system is activated by switching on the left rear display (A40/5) or right rear display (A40/6). The respective displays are switched on by pressing the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control.
Firstly the "Corporate Identity" screen is shown for roughly t = 6 s. The respective display then shows the applications last stored under the respective menu items.
Pressing the "4-zone controller with OK" control on the remote control, makes the following menu items available:
- "Disc"
- "TV" (with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) and with code (498) Japan version)
- "AUX"
- "System"
When the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control is actuated, the position of the "Roller" control determines whether the left rear display or right rear display is switched on.
The menus and submenus are called up by using the following controls on the remote control:
- "Roller":
- Select respective display
- "4-zone controller with OK":
- Navigate the interface of the screen on the respective display in four directions and select menus or submenus with "OK".
- "Back":
- Move back through menu levels
- "Mute":
- Muting of selected audio source ("Disc", "TV" or "AUX") for headphones with cord
- "VOL +" and "VOL -":
- Volume control of selected audio source ("Disc", "TV" or "AUX") for headphones connected by cable
- "Skip forward" or Skip back":
- Skip forward/back when selecting track in "Disc" menu item or TV station in "TV" menu item
- "Videotext":
- Operation of different videotext functions in "TV" menu item
- "12-key keypad":
- Alphanumeric input
Switching off
The rear entertainment system is deactivated by switching off both displays. The respective displays are switched off via the "ON/ OFF" control on the remote control.
When a display is switched off, the last application used in the respective menu item on the display is stored.
When the transmitter key (A8/1) is removed from the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73), a message that the transmitter key was removed is shown on the respective display and the user is asked whether he/she would like to continue with the application.
If the "OK" option is selected using the "4-zone controller with OK" control on the remote control, the current application remains active for t = 30 min (time out time).
After t = 30 min the rear entertainment system is shut off and the last used application of the relevant menu item is stored in the relevant display.
If the prompt asking whether the application is to be continued with, was not confirmed with "OK" on the remote control, the rea entertainment system is immediately switched off and the last used application of the respective menu item is stored in the relevant display.
"Disk" menu item
If the "Disc" menu item is called up using the "4-zone controller with OK" control on the remote control, then the audio CD or DVD video DVD, MP3-CD or DVD inserted into the DVD drive of the DVD player (A40/4) is automatically detected and the relevant menu shown on the respective display. If no audio CD or DVD, video DVD, MP3-CD or DVD is inserted or if no valid data format is detected, a fault message appears on the screen of the respective display.
Operation and setting is conducted using the listed controls on the remote control.
The "Disc" menu item on the respective display (refer to Switch on) contains the following video or audio sources:

^ MP3-CD or DVD
^ Audio CD or DVD
Video DVD
When a video DVD is detected, a scaled down version of the video image and the "Disc" menu item is displayed on the respective display with the associated menus broken down as follows:
- Application bar:

- Scaled down video image and "Full screen" menu
- Function bar:

MP3-CD or DVD
When an MP3-CD or DVD is detected, a bar graph (bar indicator = number of tracks) with the current track, the artist and the current track position and the "Disc" menu item is displayed on the respective display with the menus broken down as follows:
- Application bar:
- "Disc", "TV" (with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner , with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) and with code (498) Japan version), "AUX" and "System"
- Display:
- Bar graph with display of current track, artist and current track position
- Function bar:

Audio CD or DVD
When an audio CD or DVD is detected, a bar graph (bar indicator = number of tracks) with the current track, the artist and the current track position and the "Disc" menu item is displayed on the respective display with the menus broken down as follows:

When the "TV" menu item is called up using the "4-zone controller with OK" control on the remote control, the TV picture appears i full screen mode on the respective display. The message bar shows a control menu displaying the currently selected station. The skip left and right symbols appear in the function bar of the respective display with the previous and next channel shown next to the respective symbol. Full picture mode is terminated by pressing the "4-zone control with OK" control on the remote control.
The "TV" menu item is displayed on the respective display with the associated menus broken down as follows:

- "Bass" menu (for adjusting the bass from -10 to +10)
The functions are operated and adjusted using the "TV" menu item on the respective display using the above-specified controls on the remote control (see Switching on).
Irrespective of the settings on the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer) the currently receivable analog and digital TV channels can be selected.
"AUX" menu item
Additional video or audio devices (e.g. portable DVD player, video cameras, MP3 player or game consoles) can be connected to the rear entertainment system via the respective AUX jack for the corresponding display or the DVD player. No device-specific user interfaces are displayed for these video or audio devices in the "AUX" menu item of the respective display. The video or audio devices are operated using the video or audio device itself. The video or audio device is detected automatically. If a device with video or audio output is detected, the relevant "AUX" menu item appears on the switched-on display. If, for example a video or audio device on the AUX jack of the left rear display is connected, the display is shown within the "AUX" menu item on the switched on left rear display, this also applies to the right rear display.
If a video or audio device is connected to the AUX jack of the DVD player, the display is shown within the "AUX" menu item on whichever display is switched on
On vehicles with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer the respective video or audio source can be selected on the COMAND controller unit and then shown on whichever display is switched on. Only information on the current application (e.g. currently received radio station) is displayed.
The video or audio source of the COMAND control unit is operated via the COMAND control unit.
The "AUX" menu item can only be activated when the display is switched on. It is only necessary to select the respective display using the "Roller" control on the remote control when the "AUX" menu item is operated via the remote control.
If a video device or a video source of the COMAND controller unit is detected, the scaled down video picture and the "AUX" menu item are displayed on the respective display with the associated menus broken down as follows:
- Application bar:
- "Disk", "TV", "AUX" and "System"
- Scaled down video image and "Full screen" menu
- Function bar:
- "Selected source" (e.g. display AUX), "Source", "Treble" and "Bass"
If an audio device or an audio source of the COMAND controller unit is detected, two speaker symbols and the "AUX" menu item are shown on the respective display with the associated menus broken down as follows:

The "System" menu item on each display can be used by the rear passenger(s) to call up the relevant submenus in the following menus to then make the corresponding settings:
