Function sequence, call signal
The mobile phone receives a call signal from the mobile telephone network via the following route:
- Multifunction antenna (A28/11)
- Direct line
- Adapter cable electrical connector
The caller is shown on the display of the mobile phone and the information is forwarded simultaneously in the following way to the COMAND controller unit:
- Adapter cable electrical connector
- Direct line
- Communication control unit
- Direct line
The COMAND controller unit in vehicles (with code (810) Sound system) sends the call tone by means of audio signals to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).
From there, the ring tone is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Center dashboard speaker (H4/27)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/55) (model 212.2)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57) (model 212.0)
- Left front door sound system tweeter (H4/68)
- Right front door sound system tweeter (H4/69)
- Left rear door sound system tweeter (H4/70)
- Right rear door sound system tweeter (H4/71)
- Left front door sound system midrange and bass speakers (H4/72)
- Right front door sound system midrange and bass speakers (H4/73)
- Left rear door sound system midrange speaker (H4/80)
- Right rear door sound system midrange speaker (H4/81)
For the bass speaker (H4/17) (model 212.0) or for the bass speaker (H4/29) (model 212.2), the audio signal is routed from the COMAND controller unit to the sound system amplifier control unit via MOST and from there to the bass speaker via the rear bass speaker amplifier (N40/9) using direct lines.
On vehicles (without code (810) Sound system), the audio signal is output directly by the COMAND controller unit to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker (H4/1)
- Left front door tweeter (H4/1h1)
- Right front door speaker (H4/2)
- Right front door tweeter (H4/2h1)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/3)
- Left rear door tweeter (H4/3h1)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/4)
- Right rear door tweeter (H4/4h1)
At the same time the COMAND controller unit reduces the volume of the currently active audio source (e.g. the radio) by L = 15 dB. The currently active audio source is not muted until the caller accepts the call (MUTE). This happens internally in the COMAND controller unit.
The caller identification is shown by the COMAND controller unit on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) via a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line. The caller identification is also shown on the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) via the interior CAN (CAN B).
A mobile phone operated via Bluetooth(R) receives the call signal via the mobile phone antenna. The call signal is then forwarded to the COMAND controller unit in the via the following route:
- Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
- Direct line

With a mobile phone operated via Bluetooth(R), the mobile phone sends or receives the mobile phone signals or mobile phone data via the antenna of the mobile phone. Communication between the COMAND controller unit and the mobile phone takes place via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
Generally, after accepting the call, the telephone connection is established in hands-free mode, irrespective of whether the mobile phone is connected to the adapter cable electrical connector or not and operated via Bluetooth(R).
If, after the telephone connection has been established in handsfree mode, a mobile phone attached to the adapter cable electrical connector is disconnected from the adapter cable electrical connector and therefore from the COMAND controller unit, the telephone call is then conducted in "Private mode". If the mobile phone is reattached to the adapter cable electrical connector during a telephone call, the telephone call is then conducted in the handsfree mode again.
On a mobile phone not connected to the adapter cable electrical connector and operated via Bluetooth(R), it is possible to switch to "Private mode" following acceptance of the telephone call in hands-free mode by activating the "Private mode" menu item via the Audio/COMAND control panel and the Audio/COMAND display.
When in "private mode" the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation.
