Function requirements
^ Circuit 30g
^ One mobile phone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
^ Compatible mobile phone connected over the Japan adapter cable electrical connector (X39/46) to the communications control unit (N123/6) or a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone paired with the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) is located in the vehicle
A Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone can only be operated in the vehicle if a mobile phone is not connected to the adapter cable electrical connector.
In order to be able to operate a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone that is authorized on the COMAND controller unit in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. More information is available under:

The system is described using a mobile phone connected to the adapter cable electrical connector as an example. Deviations from this are indicated with the symbol.
Mobile phone system, general
The mobile phone system allows mobile phones operating with the Personal Digital Cellular (PDC), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) and Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access (FOMA) networks to be operated in the vehicle.
The mobile phone system consists of the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents
^ Switching on and off characteristics
^ Establishing call and terminating call
^ Accepting calls, rejecting calls and toggling
^ Voice control system
The mobile phone system includes the following subfunctions:
^ Address book
^ "Private mode"
^ "Seamless switch"
^ Toggling
Address book
The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). The address book contains the address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit. With a mobile phone connected to the adapter cable electrical connector, data (names, "vCards" and standard numbers) can also be loaded from the phone book of the mobile phone into the address book of the COMAND controller unit.
The data from the mobile phone's phone book is also permanently available, even when the mobile phone is no longer attached. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book.
Data can also be transferred from other external devices (e.g. PDA, laptop, etc.) into the address book via the Bluetooth(R) interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91). "vCards" can also be transferred from a Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) card to the address book via the PCMCIA card slot at the COMAND controller unit. These data are then permanently available as address entries.
Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries. Address entries can contain the following:
- Names (surname and first name)
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (private, business, fixed-line network, mobile or car)
- 2 e-mail addresses
- A "URL" (Uniform Resource Locator) address
- Geo position
- Company name
- Notes
- "URL"
150 entries are automatically provided with voice commands (voice tags) for the voice control system (VCS [SBS]). The address book displays the address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit and the data loaded from the mobile phone's telephone book.
Private mode"
When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. To make a call in "Private Mode", one of the following processes must be completed:
- Disconnection of mobile phone from adapter cable electrical connector during a telephone call in hands-free mode
- Call acceptance in hands-free mode and subsequent activation of the "Private mode" menu item via the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) and the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) if the mobile phone is disconnected from the adapter cable electrical connector and operated via Bluetooth(R)
- Establishing a call using buttons on the mobile phone if the mobile phone is disconnected from the adapter cable electrical connector and operated via Bluetooth(R)
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth(R), the phone call is completed in "Private mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private mode" and "Private mode" is activated.
"Seamless switch"
"Seamless switch" means either that an existing call to the mobile phone is held when the phone is separated from the adapter cable electrical connector or that an existing call is routed to the COMAND controller unit when the mobile phone is connected to the adapter cable electrical connector.
Toggling
The user can switch back and forth between telephone calls with 2 people. While the user talks to one person on the line, the connection to the other is put on hold. However, voice transmission is interrupted.
