- The COMAND controller unit is an interior CAN (CAN B) subscriber.
MOST
Control and audio signals from the following control units:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
- TV digital tuner
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)
Evaluation of input factors
The input values are processed in the COMAND controller unit.
Activation of output media and system components
- Audio output (direct to speakers) (without code (810) Sound system)
- Video output: Low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line transmits picture and video signals from the COMAND controller unit to the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8)
- COMAND fan motor (M4/13) (power supply, speed control and diagnosis)
- Switching voltage for the communications control unit, up to 31.5.2010

Component Identification:
The following components are also integrated into the COMAND controller unit:
- Central computer
- Navigation and GPS control unit
- Hard disk
- Audio amplifier (without code (810) Sound system)
- Bluetooth(R) receiver for basic telephony
- Radio tuner
Function
^ Operating elements
^ DVD drive
^ Navigation and global positioning system (GPS) control unit
^ Turn rate sensor
^ Control unit for voice control system (VCS [SBS])
^ Card reader for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) memory card
Operating elements
The function keys and keypad of the operating panel on the COMAND controller unit are read in and provided to the central computer. The button operations are processed further in the central computer and forwarded via MOST, the telematics CAN and the interior CAN to the other system components in the form of messages. If the ON button on the COMAND controller unit is pressed, the COMAND controller unit is switched on. The volume is regulated for each audio source set by turning the ON button. The function keys switch over to the audio source desired by the user.
In the event of system fault or system crash, pressing the "ON" button for t = 8 s will reboot the COMAND controller unit.
DVD drive
The integrated DVD drive can be used to read in data from the navigation DVD (e.g. navigation update) or play an audio CD/DVD or video DVD.
Only genuine audio CDs can be converted to the MP3 format and stored on the hard disk.
Navigation and GPS control unit
The navigation and GPS control unit is integrated into the COMAND controller unit and calculates the vehicle location using the incoming antenna signals, the wheel speeds and the signal of the turn rate sensor and calculates the vehicle route after the destination has been entered.
Turn rate sensor
The turn rate sensor determines the direction changes of the vehicle. It is installed in the navigation and GPS control unit. A calibration is not required.
Diagnosis
The COMAND controller unit is the diagnosis gateway for all MOST subscribers and the directly connected communications control unit (up to 31.05.2010). The diagnostic communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via the interior CAN. The diagnostic communication between the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module and the diagnostic connector (X11/4) connected to the "IS tester" is performed via the diagnostic CAN (CAN D).
Control unit for VCS [SBS]
The voice commands are processed and evaluated in the COMAND controller unit. The voice outputs for the dialogue with the user are generated in the COMAND controller unit.
Card reader for PCMCIA memory cards
With the aid of the integrated card reader, data (except audio data) from a PCMCIA memory card can be stored on the internal hard disk and then called up. Audio data on the PCMCIA memory card can be played from it, but not copied onto the hard disk.
