General
The Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) encompasses the entertainment, communication and information system in the vehicle. The COMAND controller unit contains the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:
^ Volume/tone settings, function
^ Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) function
^ TV-mode, function
^ Navigation mode, function
^ Telephone operation, function
^ Audio mode, function
^ Video mode, function
^ Media interface function (with code (518) Media Interface)
^ Electronic Toll Collection, function

The following functions are not described here, since they are provided as an independent function description:
- Mobile phone system
- Rear entertainment (with code (864) Rear entertainment system)

The displays and menu presentations for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the COMAND controller unit. The following indications are also shown in the instrument cluster (A1).

The COMAND controller unit communicates over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) with the following control units:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
- Digital TV tuner (A90/3)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)

The COMAND controller unit acts as a gateway. It routes the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the MOST and thus forms the communications interface.
