General
The following components are available in combination with the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) for operation of the audio system:
- Function keys on the COMAND controller unit (A40/3)
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Multifunction steering wheel (MFL) with left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
The VCS [SBS] is activated via the voice control system ON button (S111s4). The voice signals are transmitted to the COMAND controller unit via the hands-free system microphone (A67b1).
As of 1.6.2010. the corresponding information will be shown on the Audio/COMAND display during the operation of climate control functions, whereby the function bar is concealed.
The control description comprises the following subfunctions:

Base function, audio
If the basic audio function is activated, then the last executed audio application is started. If another audio application is to be started, then a change must be made in the menu bar and the Audio menu item selected.
The following audio sources can be selected via the "Audio" menu item:
^ Radio (FM/AM)
^ DISK
^ Memory card
^ Music register
^ AUX
^ Media interface (with code (518) Media interface)
Selections and settings can be made with the Audio/COMAND control panel.
Radio (FM/AM)
If the "Radio" menu item is activated, the default screen appears. The following is shown in the Audio/COMAND display:
- The currently set frequency, current stations with the station names from the Global Positioning System (GPS) list (location-specific) and the numbers of their memory locations (if stored)
- A cursor for selecting stations
Selection or settings via function bar:
- "Radio": Station list, frequency entry, traffic information in the AM range
- "Presets": List of stored stations, auto memory for automatic search and saving of 2-times 10 stations with the best reception
- "Sound": Configuration of the audio output
Selections and settings can be made with the Audio/COMAND control panel.
Disk
If the "Disk" menu item is activated, the default screen appears. The following is shown in the Audio/COMAND display:
- Number of titles on DVD/CD
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Artist (if available on DVD/CD)
The following selections and settings are possible:

^ Selection and settings via function bar (CD audio)
^ Title selection using skip function
^ Fast forward/rewind
Selection or settings with function bar (DVD audio)
- "DVD": Playback mode (artist, normal track sequence, random track sequence)
- Icons for start/stop: Starting and stopping the current track
- "Track list": List of tracks
- "Medium": Selection of source (DVD drive, Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) card, or Music Register)
- "Sound": Configuration of the audio output
Selection and settings via function bar (CD audio)
- "CD": Playback mode (artist, normal track sequence, random track sequence)
- "Track list": List of tracks
- "RECORD": Store the track on the hard disk (music server)
- "Medium": Selection of playback source (DVD drive, PCMCIA card, Music Register or media interface)
- "Sound": Configuration of the audio output
Selections and settings can be made with the Audio/COMAND control panel.
Title selection using skip function
The previous or next track in the track list is played back via "HARDKEYS" or by sliding the Audio/COMAND control panel to the left or right.
Fast forward/rewind
The playback position can be changed by pushing and holding the audio/COMAND controller to the right (forward) or left (back).
Memory card
If the "Memory card" menu item is activated, the default screen appears.
The following is shown in the Audio/COMAND display:
- Number of tracks
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Artist

- "MP3": Playback mode (artist, normal track sequence, random track sequence)
- "Folder": Music directories
- "Medium": Selection of source (DVD drive, PCMCIA card, or Music Register)

Music register
If the "Music Register" menu item is activated, the default screen appears.
The following is shown in the Audio/COMAND display:
- Number of tracks in directory of hard disk
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Artist

- "Music Server": Playback mode (normal track sequence, random track sequence, random album)
- "Folder": Music directories on hard disk
- "Medium": Selection of source (DVD drive, PCMCIA card, or Music Register)
- "Sound": Configuration of the audio output

AUX
If the "Audio" menu item and the "AUX" function are activated, the default screen appears. The following is shown in the Audio/ COMAND display:
- "AUX": Activate/deactivate "TA"
- "Volume": "Standard" and "Boost" (as of 1.6.2010, selecting "Boost" raises the input level)
- "Tone", "Treble", "Bass", "Surround sound" (with code (810) Sound system)
Media interface (with code (518) Media interface)
Selection or connection options:
- "iPods" are connected to the "iPod" connector
- Universal serial bus (USB) devices are connected to the USB jack
- Media Transfer Protocol devices are connected to the USB socket
Menu navigation and the graphic representation of the menu navigation take place in the Audio/COMAND display and are dependent on the specific portable terminal connected.
The "Media interface" menu item is activated via the "Audio" menu item in the application bar of the Audio/COMAND display via the Audio/COMAND control panel. The default screen appears. The following is shown in the Audio/COMAND display:
- Current track number
- Track name
- Graphical time and track display
- Name of current album
- Icon for medium that is connected (e.g. "iPod")

Selection or settings are made via the buttons on the COMAND controller unit, the Audio/COMAND control panel, the left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group or via the voice control of the VCS [SBS].
Base function, video
If the video function is activated, the video application last performed is started. To start a different video application, it is necessary to return to the menu bar and select the "Video" menu item.

- "DVD-V": Settings (brightness, contrast, color, 16:9/4:3, full screen)
- Icons for start/stop: Starting and stopping the current track
- "Medium": Selection of source (DVD drive, PCMCIA card, or Music Register)

TV base function
If the "TV" menu item is activated, the default screen appears. A TV image is shown in the Audio/COMAND display.
Selection or settings via function bar:
- "TV": Settings (brightness, contrast, color, 16:9/4:3, full screen)
- "Presets": List of stored stations, auto memory for automatic search and saving of 20 stations with the best reception
- "EPG": (Electronic Program Guide) and video text functions

Basic navigation function
The map data are preinstalled on the hard disk of the COMAND controller unit. The card data can be updated by the customer or workshop by installing the data from an update DVD. This process is permissible only when the vehicle is standing still. The engine should be running to ensure that the on-board electrical system voltage does not run down. After inserting the update DVD into the COMAND controller unit, a prompt automatically appears asking whether the data is to be installed. After a confirmation the installation is started (t = 30 to 45 min). If the installation fails (e.g. due to empty on-board electrical system battery (G1), scratches or fingerprints on the DVD, etc.), the old database can still be used. The DVD can be removed after completion or if installation is canceled.
If the basic navigation function is activated, the default screen appears. The navigation base function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Selection or settings via function bar
^ Destination entry
^ Entry of special destinations (Points of Interest (POI)) via the map display
^ Route information
Selection or settings via function bar
- "Disp": Display-specific settings
- "Route": "Route info" (arrival time, distance, view route on map (route browser), block route), appears only if a destination has already been entered
- "Guide": Selection of points of interest (POI) shown on map as a new destination
- "Save": Enter destination and store in address book
- "Dest": Submenu for setting destination options (destination entry, intermediate stop, quit)
- "Rpt.": Repeat acoustic route recommendation
Selections and settings can be made with the Audio/COMAND control panel.
Destination entry
Destination entry is possible in the "Dest." menu item. The default screen appears.
Selections or settings:
- "Set destination": Enter destination address
- "Memory point": Call up destination address from "Destination" memory
- "POI facility": Call up point of interest (POI) from list of special destinations
- "VICS" (Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS)): Traffic jam information
- "ETC history" (Electronic Toll Collection System (ETC)): Toll information
- "Settings": Navigation settings
- "Avoid area": Block or avoid areas for route planning
Entry of points of interest (POIs) via map display
Entry of points of interest on map display (2D or 3D) is possible with the "Guide" menu item. Selections and settings can be mad with the Audio/COMAND control panel
Route information
Display of route information and options (arrival time, distance, view route on map (route browser), block route) is possible with the "Route info" menu item. The default screen appears.
Selections or settings:
- "Route info": Information such as distance and time required to the destination or stopover
- "Route browser": In the route browser, the calculated route can be scrolled through using the "Next" and "Previous" menu items.
- "Block route": Enables sections of the calculated route to be blocked.
Basic telephony function
If the telephony base function "ComTel" is activated, the default screen appears.
Selections or settings (not possible while driving):
- "Phone": Access (selection) of telephones available in the vehicle
- "Own number": Show own number
- "Call lists": Access to call list (missed, accepted, dialed calls)
A connection can be made as follows:
- Dialing using the keypad on the mobile phone
- By selecting phone book entries via the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group or the VCS [SBS]
- By selecting telephone numbers from the call list
- Dialing via the function keys of the COMAND controller unit (only with the vehicle at a standstill)
Selections and settings can be made with the Audio/COMAND control panel.
Incoming calls are signaled acoustically and on the screen.
Services
The following service functions are available:
^ Address book
^ FM multiplex
Address book
The address book service function is activated via the "ComTel" basic telephony function and then via the "Address book" subfunction.
Selections or settings:
- "Address book": Call up address book function
- "Search": Search for entries
- "New": Create a new entry
- "Delete": Delete an entry
Selections and settings can be made with the Audio/COMAND control panel.
FM multiplex
The "FM multiplex" service function is activated via the "ComTel" basic telephony function and then via the "FM multiplex" subfunction.
This service function is shown by means of simplified video text. Selections or settings:
- "Top menu": Access to top level (start level/start page)
- "FM multiplex": Special settings for information text
- Various icons: For navigation on information text pages
Information such as earthquake warning, tsunami warning, or stock exchange or weather information is output. While driving only trip- relevant information is displayed.
Selections and settings can be made with the Audio/COMAND control panel.
Control of audio signals (sound settings)
The audio signals (sound settings) are controlled using the "Sound" menu item. The default screen appears.
Selections or settings:
- "Treble": Setting the treble
- "Bass": Setting the bass
- "Bal/Fad": Setting the balance and fading
- "Stereoph": Setting the tone options "Logic7" (with code (810 Sound system)
Selections and settings can be made with the Audio/COMAND control panel.
System settings
The system settings are made using the "System" menu item. The default screen appears.

- "System": Access to the submenu for system settings
- "Language": Selection of language
