Component Identification:

Location
The Audio/COMAND control panel is located on the center console between the front seats.

The concept "audio device" is used below for whichever of the following audio devices is fitted:
- Radio (A2) (with code (510) Audio 20 incl. CD changer, with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio)
- Radio with Auto Pilot System (A2/56) (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer, with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio)
- COMAND controller unit (A40/3) (with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation), with code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)

Task
The Audio/COMAND control panel comprises:
- Audio/COMAND controller for navigation within the menus and selection of menu items
- "Back" button in order to switch back a level within the menus
- "Erase" button in order to erase individual characters or complete inputs

The Audio/COMAND control panel performs the following:
^ Operating unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle
^ Read in input signals
^ Actuation of system components

The audio equipment provides the user with a structured and uniform interface for the following system components which can be operated via the Audio/COMAND control panel:
- Audio:
- Radio
- CD (also MP3)
- Auxiliary connection (AUX) input in the glove compartment, for external audio equipment (without code (518) Media Interface)
- Electrical connector for media interface (X18/70) (with code (518) Media interface)

- Video:
- DVD audio/DVD video (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer, with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio, with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation), with code (528) COMAND including DVD changer)

- TV (with code (498) Japan version, with code (863) TV tuner digital/analog)
- Communication (telephone (with address book function), read SMS) (with code (386) Comfort telephony)
- Navigation (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer, with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio, with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation))

The Audio/COMAND control panel contains the following direct connections:

CAN
The Audio/COMAND control panel transmits control data to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A).

Actuation of system components
Functions of the audio equipment can be selected via the Audio/ COMAND control panel.

Component Identification:

The buttons are designed as push/push buttons.

In detail the following conditions are possible in the Audio/COMAND control panel:
- Press: vertically downwards
- Turn: left or right
- Tilt: in four quadrants (Y- and X-direction, as well as in diagonal directions)
