Cockpit management and data system (COMAND), general
The COMAND controller unit (A40/3) is the central control for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle. On the COMAND controller unit with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or with code (528) COMAND with DVD changer, the DVD drive is designed as a changer, i.e. a selection can be made between up to 6 CDs or DVDs.

The COMAND controller unit contains the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents

The displays and menu presentations for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the COMAND controller unit. The following applications are also displayed in the instrument cluster (A1) at the same time as being displayed in the Audio/COMAND display:

The COMAND controller unit communicates over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) with the following control units:
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) control unit (N87/5) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio, as of 1.6.2010)
- SDAR/high definition tuner control unit (N87/8) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio, up to 31.5.2010)
- TV tuner (analog/digital) (A90/1) (with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner)
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)

The COMAND controller unit acts as a gateway. It routes the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the MOST and thus forms the communications interface.
