Component Identification:

Location
The multifunction steering wheel is located on the driver side and is bolted to the steering column.

Task
The multifunction steering wheel serves for increasing the active driving safety in road traffic in combination with the instrument cluster (A1). This means that the driver can concentrate on the traffic without distraction when operating various vehicle components.
The multifunction steering wheel allows the driver to operate and query all multimedia services (e.g. radio, navigation).
Furthermore, in vehicles with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles the individual forward gears can be shifted directly using the steering wheel gear shifter in the manual shift program "M".

Function
The requests that are made via the various buttons are read in by the steering column tube module (N80) and made available to the other control units via the engine compartment CAN and the interior CAN. The switch and controls illumination on the multifunction steering wheel is also actuated via the steering column tube module.

The fanfare buttons are on the relevant side beneath the impact absorber and the airbag unit, and are operated by pressing the appropriate side of the impact absorber.
