M16/6 Throttle valve actuator

Location
The throttle valve actuator is located at the rear of the intake manifold.

Task
The throttle valve actuator regulates the functions:
- Idle speed
- Driving mode (according to accelerator pedal position and engine load)
- Cruise control function or Distronic mode (if Distronic installed)
- Electronic accelerator limp-home mode

Function
The actuator motor (M16/6m1) in the throttle valve actuator adjusts the opening angle of the throttle valve continuously from approx. 0 to 90° according to specifications from the ME-SFI [ME ] control unit (N3/10).
Both counter-moving actual value potentiometers 1 and 2 (M16/6r1, M16/6r2) inform the ME-SFI [ME] control unit about the current position of the throttle valve.

In deenergized status (e.g limp-home), the opening angle of the throttle valve (from 10 to 12°) is determined by the return spring (limp-home position).

The throttle valve actuator performs checking of its return spring for "ignition ON" under the following preconditions:
- Gear range "P" or "N" engaged
- Vehicle at rest
- Engine OFF
- Coolant temperature between 5 and 100
- Accelerator not operated

For first time connection of a throttle valve actuator to the vehicle the ME-SFI [ME] control unit automatically executes adaptation of the actuator.

The adaptation is performed within about 60 s after first energization (ignition ON) and comprises:
- Identified limp-home position
- Identified lower mechanical end stop of throttle valve
- Matches the actual value amplifier (signals 1 and 2) in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
- Checking the return spring

The throttle valve actuator can also be adapted manually with the DAS.
