Component Identification:
Component Identification:
Gear indicator in instrument cluster (A1) in sport transmission mode "S" and comfort transmission mode "C"
It shows the driver the shift range currently selected "1, 2, 3, 4" or selector lever position "P, R, N, D".
Gear indicator in instrument cluster in transmission mode Manual "M"
It shows the driver the engaged gear "1, 2, 3, 4, 5" or the selector lever position "P, R, N".
Transmission mode display in instrument cluster
It shows the driver the program selection Comfort "C", Sport "S" or Manual "M" selected on the transmission mode switch (S16/5) (except model 230.477 with code (494) USA version). The data comes via the engine compartment CAN (CAN C) from the ETC control unit (N15/3) and from the electronic selector lever module (N15/5). 6 different functions can be selected using the selector lever and 3 different transmission modes can be selected using the transmission mode switch.
Selector lever positions
"P" Park lock and start position
"R" Reverse gear
"N" Neutral and start position (no power transmission, vehicle can move freely)
"D" All 5 forward gears are available
Upshifting and downshifting
Shifting up and down is done using the PLUS steering wheel gear shifter (S111/1) and the MINUS steering wheel gear shifter (S110/1) (with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles) or using the selector lever touch control.
"+ touch"
Shift up by one gear at a time. The shift range is expanded simultaneously in transmission modes "C" and "S". Pressing and holding the selector lever initiates a direct change to selector lever position "D".
"- touch"
Shift down by one gear at a time. The shift range is limited simultaneously in transmission modes "C" and "S". Pressing and holding the selector lever changes into a shift range from which the vehicle can be accelerated or decelerated favorably.
Transmission modes
Sport transmission mode "S"
Starting off in 1st gear for all driving situations.
Comfort "C" transmission modes
Start-off in 2nd gear except in 1st gear range. The gear changes take place at lower engine speed.
The manual "M" transmission mode except model 230.477 with code (494) USA version, except model 230.479 with code (P99) Special model "AMG Black Series"
Direct gear selection using selector lever or MINUS steering wheel gear shifter and PLUS steering wheel gear shifter (with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles).
Manual "M" transmission mode with model 230.479 with code (P99) Special model "AMG Black Series"
In the manual "M" transmission mode the driver can choose between the "M1" transmission mode and the "M2" transmission mode using the Standard (M1)/Sport (M2) manual transmission switch (S16/14s1). If the driver uses the transmission mode switch to select the manual "M" transmission mode, then the "M1" transmission mode is always active and the left light-emitting diode (LED) in the Standard (M1)/Sport (M2) manual transmission switch. If the driver presses the Standard (M1)/Sport (M2) manual transmission switch then the "M2" transmission mode is active and the right LED also lights up.
Pressing the Standard (M1)/Sport (M2) manual transmission switch initiates a change to the "M1" transmission mode. The driver can also select a gear directly using the selector lever or the MINUS steering wheel gear shifter and PLUS steering wheel gear shifter (with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles).
On model 230.479 with code (P99) Special model "AMG Black Series" the shift up instruction is used to ask the driver to shift up in the manual "M" transmission mode to the next higher gear. The shift up request is matched to a sporty driving style (high dynamics with maximum acceleration).
When kick-down is actuated the upshifts and downshifts take place as in transmission mode Sport "S".
