Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair
AR33.25-P-0400T Remove/Install Steering Knuckle
Shown On Model 211 With Steel Suspension:
Remove/Install
DANGER
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of injury from trapping or crushing body parts, risk of injury to skin and eyes due to brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system
- Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
CAUTION:
- When carrying out service and repair operations on the front-end assembly, always take great care to prevent leaving scratches, notches or fissures in the aluminum components. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected
- See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
NOTE: Installation: Tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components only in curb condition.
1 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS
2 Remove front wheel.
NOTE: Installation: Only fit front wheel after adjusting the wheel bearing play
3 Remove front rpm sensor (L6/1, L6/2) from steering knuckle (5) and place to the side.
NOTE: To do this, unscrew bolt (6a) and unclip electric supply lines from retaining clamps.
CAUTION: Installation: The correct installation position must be noted, the chafe protector (5a) must be screwed to the front rpm sensor (L6/1, L6/2) as shown. It must not be installed between the left or right front wheel speed sensor (L6/1, L6/2) and the steering knuckle (5).
4 Remove brake disk (61) at front axle.
5 Remove front wheel hub (9)
6 Remove brake caliper dust shield (62).
7 Press tie rod joint (10a) out of steering knuckle (5)
8 Press radius rod (18) out of steering knuckle (5).
NOTE: Do not detach torque strut (18) from the front axle carrier.
9 Press spring link (17) out of steering knuckle (5)
NOTE: Do not detach spring link (17) from the front axle carrier.
10 Press follower joint (8a) out of steering knuckle (5).
11 Remove steering knuckle (5).
Inspecting
12 Check supporting joint (7)
- Check boot for damage and supporting joint (7) for wear, replace if necessary.
- Press supporting joint out of steering knuckle and mount.
13 Install in the reverse order
14 Adjust wheel bearing play
15 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
16 Use STAR DIAGNOSIS to move brake pads toward brake disks
17 Carry out chassis alignment check.
