Steering Shaft Coupler: Service and Repair
Remove/Install Steering Coupling
1 Fully extend or pull out adjustable steering column
NOTE: Required to separate the steering coupling (25).
2 Deactivate easy entry/exit feature
CAUTION: Deactivate the easy entry/exit feature otherwise the windshield may be damaged if the holding device is installed.
3 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and secure with holding device
CAUTION: The steering wheel must not be turned with the steering coupling (25) detached otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.
4.1 Remove bottom part of noise encapsulation
- Vehicles with diesel engines
4.2 Remove engine compartment paneling
- Vehicles with gasoline engines
5 Detach steering coupling (25) from lower steering shaft (80a) by unscrewing bolt (25a)
6 Pull lower steering shaft (80a) up and out of steering coupling (25)
CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage) as the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral forces.
NOTE: Installation: Insert bottom steering shaft (80a) fully into the steering coupling (25); pay attention to the studs of the steering coupling (25)and groove of the lower steering shaft (80a) (arrows).
7 Unscrew nut with bolt (25b) from steering coupling (25)
CAUTION: Installation: Replace self-locking nut.
8 Carefully pull steering coupling (25) off control valve of rack-and-pinion steering (23)
CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage) as the control valve has a predetermined fracture point. If necessary, widen the clamping groove slightly using a screwdriver.
NOTE: Installation: Turn rack-and-pinion steering to center position and fit steering coupling (25).
9 Pull locking plate (25f) off steering coupling while lifting lug using a suitable tool
CAUTION: Installation: Replace locking plate (25f) with self-locking nut. Push up locking plate (25f) until the lug engages in the steering coupling (25).
10 Install in the reverse order.
