General information
The driver information system is operated using the:
- Rotary switch with joystick and control buttons on COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]), using the VCS [SBS] switch (S93/2) and then with voice commands.

The control description comprises the following subfunctions:
^ Audio base function
^ Video base function
^ TV base function
^ Basic navigation function
^ Basic telephony function
^ Services (address book, FM multiplex)
^ Control of audio signals (sound settings)
^ System settings
^ Electronic Toll Collection system (ETC)

Basic audio function
If the audio base function is activated, the audio application last performed is started. If another audio application is to be started, then a change must be made in the menu bar and the Audio menu item selected.
The following audio sources can be selected from the menu item Audio:
^ Radio (amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM))
^ Disc (Compact Disk (CD), Digital Versatile Disk (DVD)) Music register
^ MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (MP3) (memory card (Secure Digital (SD) card))
^ AUX, except code (518) Media interface
^ Media interface Universal Consumer Electronic Interface (UCI), with code (518) Media interface
Selection or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the hardkeys or voice control.

Radio (AM/FM)
If the Radio menu item is activated, the default screen appears. The play area displays the following:
- The frequency set at any given time, the current station with the name of the station and the numbers of their memory locations (if stored).
- A frequency beam in the frequency range or band for selecting stations.

If a station name has not been stored, only the frequency will be shown.

Selection or settings are possible with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the left and right multifunction steering wheel button groups.

Disk (CD/DVD)
If the disk menu item is activated and a CD or DVD inserted, the basic display appears.
The following appears on the display:
- Number of titles on DVD/CD
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Group (when present on CD)
- Album name (when present on CD)

If no CD or DVD is inserted, the message "No Disk".

The following selections and settings are possible:
^ Selection or settings with function bar (DVD audio)
^ Selection or setting with function bar (CD audio)
^ Title selection with skip function
^ Fast Forward/Rewind

Selection or settings with function bar (DVD audio)
- DVD: Play mode (group, normal title sequence, random title sequence)
- Icons for start/stop: Starting and stopping the current title
- Track list: List of tracks
- Medium: Selection of source (DVD drive, SD card or music register)
- Sound: Configuration of audio output

Selection or setting with function bar (CD audio)
- CD: Play mode (group, normal title sequence, random title sequence)
- RECORD: Store title on hard disk (music server)
- Track list: Title list when present on CD
- Medium: Selection of source (DVD drive, SD card, music register)
- Sound: Configuration of audio output

Selection or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Title selection using skip function:
The previous or subsequent track can be played by pressing the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) or the asterisk key and entry of the track number o the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Fast forward/rewind
The playback position can be changed by pressing and holding the left or right control buttons on the radio or the scroll forward/back buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL).

Music register
If the menu item Music register is activated, the basic display appears.
The following appears on the display:
- Number of titles in directory of hard disk
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Artist (when stored)

Selection or settings via function bar:
- Music register: Play mode (normal title sequence, random title or album sequence, delete function for all files, memory info (display of number of memories available for use))
- Folder: Music directory on hard disk
- Medium: Selection of source (DVD drive, SD card or Music Server)
- Sound: Configuration of audio output

Selection or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Title selection using skip function:
The previous or subsequent track can be played by pressing the scroll forward/back button on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) or the asterisk key and entry of the track number on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Fast forward/rewind
The playback position can be changed by pressing and holding the left or right control buttons on the radio or the scroll forward/back buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL).

MP3 (memory card (SD card))

If the memory card menu item is activated, the basic display appears.
The following appears on the display:
- Number of tracks on SD card
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Group (when stored)

Selection or settings via function bar:
- MP3: Play mode (normal title sequence, random title sequence or folder selection (when more than one is stored))
- Folder: Music index on memory card
- Medium: Selection of source (DVD drive, SD card, music register)
- Sound: Configuration of audio output

Selection or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Media Interface (UCI) with code 518 Media Interface
If the menu item Audio and the UCI function are activated, the basic display appears. The following appears on the display:
- Play lists
- Artists
- Albums
- Genres or audio books

Selection or connection possibilities:
- IPods: Are connected to the IPod connector.
- Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices: Are connected to the USB socket.
- Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) devices: Are connected to the USB socket and to the AUX jack.

Selections or settings can be made using the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group.

Menu guidance and display are accomplished on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and are dependent on the portable terminal connected.

Video base function
If the video base function is activated, the video application last performed is started. To start a different video application, it is necessary to go back to the menu line and select the menu item Video.

Selections and settings are possible over the function line (when hard key is pressed):
- DVD-V: DVD settings (brightness, contrast, color, 16:9/4:3, full screen)
- Icons for start/stop: Starting and stopping the current title
- Medium: Selection of source (DVD drive, SD card or music register)
- Sound: Configuration of audio output

Selection or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Title selection using skip function:
When a DVD video film is running, the previous or subsequent track can be played by pressing the scroll forward/back button on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) or the asterisk key and entry of the track number on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Fast forward/rewind
When a DVD video film is running, the playback position can be changed by pressing and holding the right or left control buttons on the radio or the scroll forward/back buttons on the multifunction steering wheel.

TV base function
If the TV menu item is activated, the basic display appears. A TV picture is shown on the display.

Selection or settings via function bar:
- TV1: Settings (brightness, contrast, color, 16:9/4:3, full screen)
- Presets: List of saved stations, auto memory for automatic search and storage of 20 stations with best reception
- Sound: Configuration of audio output

Selection or settings are possible with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the left and right multifunction steering wheel button groups.

Basic navigation function
The card data is preinstalled on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit hard disk. The card data can be updated by the customer or workshop by installing the data from an update DVD. This process is permissible only when the vehicle is standing still. After inserting the update DVD into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, a question automatically appears whether the data is to be installed. After confirmation, installation i accomplished. If the installation fails (due to dead battery (G1), scratches or fingerprints on DVD, etc.), operation can be continued with the old data. After installation, the DVD can be remove

If the navigation base function (Navi) is activated, the basic display appears.
The navigation base function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Selection or settings using the function bar
^ Destination entry
^ Entry of POIs via map display
^ Route information and options
^ Display compass

Selection and settings via function bar
- Disp.: Display-specific settings (Aspect, Map Style, Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS), Direction, Display Points of Interest (POI), POI List)
- Route: Way point, detour, recalculate, alternative route, all route map, route information (arrival time, distance, show route on map (route browser), inhibit route) appears only when already entered for a destination.
- Save: Enter destination and store in address book
- Dest: Submenu in which destination options can be stored (destination entry, dest. info, stopover, quit)
- Rpt.: Repeat acoustic driving recommendation

Selections or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or by voice control.

Destination entry
The destination can be entered with the menu item Navi. The default screen appears.

Selections or settings:
- Set destination: Enter destination address
- Memory point: Call destination address from "Destination memory"
- POI facility: Call point of interest (POI) from list of special destinations
- VICS information: Traffic jam information
- ETC history: Information on electronic toll collection system
- Settings: Navigation settings
- Avoid area: Inhibit or avoid areas for route planning

Entry of POIs via map display
Entry of points of interest on map display (2D or 3D) is possible with the Navi. menu item Selection or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Route information and options
Display of route information and options (arrival time, distance, view route on map (route browser), inhibit route) is possible under the Route menu item. The basic display appears.

Selections or settings:
- Route info: Information, such as distance and time required to destination or intermediate stop
- Route browser: In the route browser, the calculated route can be scrolled through using the "Next" and "Previous" menu items.
- Show route: Route is indicated on map.

Display compass
The "Display compass" function can only be selected on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit by selecting the following menus using the buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
- 1. Menu "Navigation"
- 2. Menu item "Position" on function bar
- 3. Sub-menu item "Compass"

Basic telephony function
If the Telephony base function (ComTel) is activated, the basic screen appears. Selections or settings:
- Bluetooth list:
- Access (selection) to telephones available in vehicle
- Possibility of loading from SD card (when data is present)
- Delete functions
- Microphone volume setting
- Switch off telephone when portable CTEL separation point (X39/37) is connected
- Own number: Show own number

- Call lists: Access to call list (missed, accepted, diode calls)

A connection can be made as follows:
- Select on mobile telephone keypad
- Select with control buttons on COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- By selecting telephone book entries on the steering wheel control or with the voice control system
- Select telephone numbers from call list

Selection or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. Incoming calls are signaled acoustically and on the screen.

Services (address book, E-mail, FM multiplex) Address book
The address book service function is activated via the basic telephony function (ComTel) and then via the address book subfunction.
Selections or settings:
- Address book: Calling up address book function
- Search: Search for entries
- New: Create new entry
- Delete: Delete entry

Selection or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

E-mail
The e-mail service function can be activated with the telephony base function (ComTel) and then in the e-mail subfunction.

Selections or settings:
- Inbox: Incoming E-mails
- New: Create new E-mail
- Draft: E- mail drafts
- Outbox: Sent E-mails
- e-mail: Configuration of E-mail accounts
- Update: Update E-mail receipt

Selection or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

FM multiplex
The FM multiplex service function can be activated with the telephony base function (ComTel) and then over the FM multiplex subfunction.

Selections or settings:
- Top menu: Access to top level (start level /start page)
- FM multiplex: Special settings for Infotext
- Various icons: For navigation on Infotext pages

Selection or settings can be made using the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Control of audio signals (sound settings)
The audio signals (sound settings) are controlled using the Sound menu item. The default screen appears.
Selections or settings:
- Treble: Setting the treble
- Bass: Setting the bass
- Bal/Fad: Setting the balance and fading
- Stereoph: Tone setting options (ambient) or (Pro Logic 7 surround sound), with code (810) Sound system

Selection or settings can be made with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

System settings
The system settings are made using the System menu item. The default screen appears.
Selections or settings:
- System: Access to submenu for system settings
- Language: Selection of language

The following system settings can be made:
- Display

- Time
The following settings can be made:
- Time
- Date
- Display format for time and date
- Time zone

- Read aloud
The following settings can be made:
- slow
- medium
- fast

- Linguatronic
The following settings can be made:
- Display help window
- New further training
- Erase further training

- Services
The following settings can be made:
- Status of services

Display and change the status of the available services
- Find Bluetooth devices
- Disable Bluetooth

- Reset
The settings can be reset to the manufacturer default settings.

The following languages can be selected on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit screen:
- Japanese
- English
