AR35.20-P-0111T Remove/Install Torque Strut
Removing and Installing Torque Strut
Shown On Model 211 With Steel Suspension:
Shown On Model 211 With Airmatic:
DANGER:
- Risk of fatal accident if the vehicle slips off the lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of injury with trapped or crushed body parts, risk of injury to skin and eyes from brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system.
- Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
CAUTION:
- When working on the rear axle, take care to avoid leaving scratches, cracks or notches in the surfaces of the aluminum components. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be reduced.
- See notes on AIRmatic
- See notes on self-locking bolts and nuts
NOTE: Installation: Tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components only in curb condition.
1 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS
2 Empty/fill left and right rear air springs (6i) using STAR DIAGNOSIS
- With Airmatic, code (489a)
CAUTION: Installation: Always fill the rear air springs in the KO position otherwise they will be irreparably damaged!
3.1 Remove rear muffler
3.2 Remove exhaust system from flange connection onwards
4 Remove underbody paneling
NOTE: Only left and right rear sections.
5 Detach rear brake cables
NOTE: Only detach from automatic cable slack adjuster.
6 Detach propeller shaft (106) from rear axle center assembly (50)
NOTE: The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft.
7 Loosen fitted sleeves of flexible couplings on flange
8 Unscrew bolts for propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a) and remove rear section of propeller shaft (106)
NOTE: Installation: Assemble the propeller shaft in the correct position. Tighten flexible coupling on rear axle center assembly before tightening bolts on propeller shaft intermediate bearing.
9 Remove rear wheels.
10 Remove rear brake pads
CAUTION: Hang the brake caliper up with a hook to relieve the strain on the brake hose.
11 Remove fender liner from rear fender
- With Airmatic, code (489a)
12 Unplug electrical connectors for brake and chassis components from rear axle
- With Airmatic, code (489a)
13 Unclip electrical feed cables (arrows) of left and right rear wheel speed sensors and rear right brake pad contact sensor from retaining clips
- Except Airmatic, code (489a)
14 Unclip left and right air springs (6i) from frame floor using assembly lever
- With Airmatic, code (489a)
NOTE: Installation: Push the air springs onto the retaining clip on the frame floor until they lock with an audible click.
15 Remove left and right rear springs
- Except Airmatic, code (489a)
16 Detach left and right shock absorbers (6) from spring links
17 Raise wheel carrier (7) using transmission jack and transmission platform until rear axle shaft (37) is roughly horizontal
18 Detach torque strut (3) from wheel carrier (7)
19 Clamp off filler hose (17) of fuel tank
DANGER:
- Risk of explosion from fuel igniting, risk of poisoning from inhaling and swallowing fuel as well as risk of injury to eyes and skin from contact with fuel.
- No fire, sparks, naked flames or smoking.
- Pour fuels only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
- Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.
20 Disconnect filler hose (17) of fuel tank from filler neck (17a)
CAUTION: Collect escaping fuel in a suitable container!
- Check filler hose and hose clamps, if necessary empty fuel tank and replace filler hose.
21 Lower rear axle
22 Mark installation position of torque strut (3) on rear axle carrier (1) and on torque strut (3) with felt pen
CAUTION: Do not mark by scratching or notching the surface!
23 Detach torque strut (3) from rear axle carrier (1)and remove
NOTE: Installation: Transfer installation position marking to new torque strut and bolt torque strut to rear axle carrier (1) in the correct position.
24 Replace retaining clips for air springs
- With Airmatic, code (489a)
25 Install in the reverse order
26 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS
27 Use STAR DIAGNOSIS to move brake pads toward brake discs
28 Carry out chassis alignment check.
