Front Wheel Hub Removal and Installation

Shown On Model 220:






DANGER:
- Risk of injury Body parts may become jammed or crushed. Risk of injury to Skin and eyes may be injured due to brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system
- Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.


CAUTION:
- When carrying out service and repair operations on the front axle, always take great care to prevent leaving scratches, notches or fissures in the aluminum components. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected
- See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts


1 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
- Model 211, 230

2 Remove front wheel
3 Remove brake disk
4 Pull off hub cap (9e)
5 Release hexagon socket head bolt (9i), unscrew clamping nut (9d) and remove outer tapered roller bearing (9m).

NOTE: Installation: Adjust wheel bearing play

6 Pull off front wheel hub (9).

NOTE:
- If front wheel hub is firmly attached (9), detach front wheel hub (9) with slide hammer puller.
- Installation:
- Rub grease on the radial sealing ring as well as in the space in between sealing lip and outer tapered roller bearing (9m), refill if necessary. Push front wheel hub (9) with inner tapered roller bearing and radial sealing ring onto steering knuckle pin (5a).
- Pack front wheel hub (9) with grease.

Testing
7 Inspect brake cover (35).
- Replace if necessary.

NOTE: Installation: When using a new brake cover (35) ensure that the grommet for sealing the rpm sensor bore is pushed onto the rpm sensor.

8 Check the steering knuckle pin (5a) for discoloration and wear on the bearing seat as well as the surface area of the radial sealing ring.

CAUTION: Discoloration can occur due to heat build-up from incorrectly adjusted bearing play, Replace steering knuckle.

9 Check front wheel hub (9)
- Check the threaded socket and the rotor teeth for damage, if necessary, Replace front wheel hub (9).

10 Check the lateral and radial runout of the front wheel hub (9)
- Permissible lateral runout
- Permitted vertical runout
- If the permissible measured values are exceeded, Replace front wheel hub.

11 Check tapered roller bearing and bearing races, replace if necessary.
12 Install in the reverse order
13 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.

14 Use STAR DIAGNOSIS to move brake pads toward brake disks.
