The distance warning system (AWS) is an additional function of DISTRONIC PLUS. It warns the driver within a speed range from 30 km/h to 250 km/h of moving or stationary obstacles in his lane.
Activation/deactivation
Independently of the distance control by DISTRONIC PLUS, the driver can activate or deactivate the distance warning system separately via the left or right multifunction steering wheel button group (S110, S111) in the "Assist" menu in the instrument cluster (A1). Thus the distance warning system is dependent here on the function (function requirements) of the radar sensor system.
When the distance warning system is activated, the "distance warning system indicator" at the bottom left next to the Electronic Speedometer (A1p8) is lit.
The distance warning is triggered whenever a deceleration >6 m/s2 is necessary in order to avoid a collision. Distance warnings are indicated by the DTR warning lamp and an intermittent signal.
The multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster shows the host vehicle, the set target distance and the preceding vehicle with its current proximity.
For vehicles with "Night View Assist" the distance graphic in the multifunction display is not displayed for an activated Night View function!
As an additional function, the driver is alerted if he/she remains within a distance <0.9 s from the preceding vehicle for longer than 3 s. The DTR warning lamp remains lit until the correct distance has been reestablished.
This is intended to give the driver an opportunity to avoid a fine (levied in some countries for leaving insufficient distance to the vehicle in front).
The distance warning system does not perform any control functions by itself, such as braking the vehicle.
