Lighting - 'AUTO Lights Inoperative' Message Displayed

Date: September 16, 2008

Order No.: P-B-82.30/635

Supersedes:

Group: 82

SUBJECT:
Model 204.054/056/081

Equipped with Rain/Light Sensor (SA code 345)

"AUTO Lights Inoperative" Displayed in the Instrument Cluster

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of the message "AUTO Lights Inoperative" displaying in the instrument cluster multifunction display, this may be due to a hardware fault in light/rain sensor module (LRSM).

Note:
The condition is dependent on ambient temperature. The message may appear shortly after engine start-up. At the same time, the limp-home mode will be initiated for the low beams and windshield wipers. When the interior compartment warms up, the message will disappear and normal functionality of the low beam and windshield wiper will resume.

Note:
If the low beams are in limp-home mode because of a faulty LRSM, the low beams will enter NIGHT mode. If the wipers are in limp-home mode because of a faulty LRSM, the wipers will wipe at a predetermined wiping cycle.

To resolve, check the part number of the light/rain sensor. If the part number is either A204 870 47 26 or A204 870 42 26, replace the part as per WIS instructions AR82.30-P-7800CW with part number listed below or its successor.

Note:
Please submit all damaged parts along with a quick test. Costs for components submitted without a documented fault code or faulty part number (noted above) WILL NOT BE REIMBURSED.
