Manual drive mode selection, function:

With the center shifter console, it is possible to adapt the automatic shifting sequence to particular operating conditions via the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) and the automatic transmission transmission mode button (S16/12).

Although the shift range can be changed in the forward gears while driving, the fully integrated transmission control control unit (Y3/8n4) prevents a shift operation if the engine speed is too high.

On vehicles with code (494) USA version the driver can choose between transmission mode "C" and transmission mode "S".

On vehicles except code (494) USA version the driver can choose between transmission mode "C", transmission mode "S" and transmission mode "M".

When the automatic transmission mode button is at position "C" (Comfort program), the overall ratio is longer compared to position "S" (Sport program) and thus a lower output torque is available for driving off in a forward and backward direction. This allows the vehicle to move off more gently. In addition, the gears are not driven to maximum revs.

When the automatic transmission mode button is at position "M" (Manual program), all forward gears can be shifted directly via the steering wheel shift buttons by pressing the steering wheel downshift button (S110/1) (with code (428) Steering wheel shift buttons) or the steering wheel upshift button (S111/1) (with code (428) Steering wheel shift buttons). A shift which would result in an unacceptably high or low rotational speed is not carried out.
