The starter control which is integrated in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) takes over actuation of the starter (M1) and deactivation of the starter after reaching the engine starting speed.

Starting prerequisites
Actuation of the starters take place only at "Start enable" (drive authorization) by the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73).

With code 494 USA version
The starter control is also only released for fully depressed clutch pedal.
The start enable clutch pedal switch (S40/5) is read in by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit to do this.

Starting
On actuating the transmitter key (A8/1) in start position, the ME-SFI [ME] control unit receives the "Circuit 50 signal" from the electronic ignition lock control unit via the chassis CAN (CAN E).
Start control is carried out automatically by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (touch start). It actuates the starter circuit 50 relay (N10/1kM) with a ground signal.
The power contact on the relay closes and the starter solenoid switch is supplied at "circuit 50" with voltage from "circuit 30 unfused".

Ending start
When reaching an engine starting speed of 400 up to 700 rpm and a starting time of approx. 5 to 40 seconds (dependent on the coolant temperature), the ME-SFI [ME] control unit interrupts negative activation to the starter circuit 50 relay and therefore ends the starting procedure.

START ABORTION
Once the engine start operation is initiated, shutting off "circuit 50" has no further effect on the starting procedure.
The starting procedure can only be broken off by switching off the ignition (ignition OFF).
