Task
The control and operating unit actuates all functions required for climate control in the vehicle.

Design
The control and operating unit contains the following controls and displays:
^ Left temperature selector wheel (1)
^ Automatic button (2)
^ On/off button (3)
^ MONO button (4)
^ A/C button (5)
^ REST button (6) (not USA)
^ Right temperature selector wheel (7)
^ Defrosting button (8)
^ Right air distribution button (9)
^ Increase air volume button (10)
^ Reduce air volume button (11)
^ Display (12)
^ Left air distribution button (13)
^ Rear window heater button (N22/7s1)
^ Air recirculation mode button (N22/7s2)

On (United States of America) vehicles, the REST button is not present. The MAX A/C button is installed instead.

The control and operating unit enables the following operations:
^ Interior temperature selection separated for the left and right side
^ Automatic blower control and air distribution
^ Manual blower control
^ Manual air distribution
^ Switching the automatic air conditioning on and off
^ Defrost function
^ Switch refrigerant compressor (A9) on and off
^ Mono mode
^ Recirculated air mode
^ Maximum cooling output (only USA)
^ Residual heat utilization
^ Control of the rear window heater (R1)

The control and operating unit takes over the following actuations:

Via interior CAN:
- Coolant circulation pump (M13/5)
- Fan motor control unit (N65/2)
- Control valve of refrigerant compressor
Via front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1)

Via climate control LIN:
- Rear blower motor (M2/1)
- Fresh air/recirculated air flap actuator motor (M2/5)
- Left blend air flap actuator motor (M2/6)
- Right blend air flap actuator motor (M2/7)
- Left defroster flap actuator motor (M2/8)
- Right defroster flap actuator motor (M2/9)
- Left footwell flap actuator motor (M2/10)
- Right footwell flap actuator motor (M2/11)
- Left center air vent flap actuator motor (M2/12)
- Right center air vent flap actuator motor (M2/13)
- Diffuser flap actuator motor (M2/21)
- Ram air flap actuator motor (M2/34)
- Rear blend air flap actuator motor (M2/35)
- PTC heater booster (R22/3) (with diesel engine)

Direct:
- Blower regulator (A32n1)

The following sensors are read in by the control and operating unit:
^ Direct:
- Interior temperature sensor (B10/4)
- Evaporator temperature sensor (B10/6)
- Air outlet temperature sensor, left side air vent (B10/31)
- Air outlet temperature sensor, right side air vent (B10/32)
- Air outlet temperature sensor, left front footwell vent (B10/35)
- Air outlet temperature sensor, right front footwell vent (B10/36)
- Air outlet temperature sensor, rear footwell vent (B10/38)
- Sun sensor (B32/3)
- Interior temperature sensor (N70/3b1) (without code (414) Electric tilting/sliding roof in glass design)

^ Via climate control LIN:
- Dew point sensor (B11/12)
- Rear automatic air conditioning operating unit (N22/4)

^ Via interior CAN:
from front SAM control unit:
- Refrigerant pressure sensor (B12)
- Outside temperature sensor (B14)
from overhead control panel control unit (N70):
- Interior temperature sensor (N70b1)
(with code (414) Electric tilting/sliding roof in glass design)

Control possibilities

ON/OFF button
The automatic air conditioning can be completely switched off and on by pressing the on/off button.

Temperature selector wheel
The desired temperature setting for the left and right sides can be set by turning the associated temperature selector wheel. The selected specified temperature is displayed via LEDs on the border of the temperature selector wheel.

Air volume button
Pressing the respective air volume button enables the air volume to be manually selected.
The selected setting is shown on the display.

Air distribution button
The air distribution can be manually set for the respective side via the air distribution buttons. The selected air distribution setting is shown on the display.

Automatic button
The air volume and air distribution are regulated automatically when the automatic button is pressed. When the automatic mode is activated, the indicator LED comes on.

A/C button
Pressing the A/C button switches off the refrigerant compressor. All other functions are retained.
The function LED comes on when the refrigerant compressor is switched on.

Rear window heater button
Pressing the rear window heater button switches on the rear window heater; at the same time, the function LED in the rear window heater button is switched on.

Mono button
When the MONO button is pressed, the values for air distribution and temperature set on the driver side are adopted for the passenger side.

Air recirculation mode button
When the air recirculation mode button is pressed briefly (t < 1.5 s), the main air flap is closed to prevent air entering from outside. The function LED is illuminated during operation. If pressed for longer than t > 1.5 s, the control and operating unit transmits the "Air recirculation closing" or "Air recirculation opening" command via the interior CAN.
The side windows and the tilting/sliding roof (with code (414) Electric tilting/sliding roof in glass design) or the panoramic glass sunroof (with code (413) Panoramic glass sunroof with top sliding sunroof) are then closed or opened.

Defrosting button
Pressing the defrosting button sets the temperature to "maximum" and the distributes the air flow to the defroster vents. All the other flaps are closed. The blower output is regulated to match the coolant temperature. The function LED in the defrosting button illuminates.

REST button
Pressing the REST button activates the residual engine heat utilization function. When the function is activated, the function LED comes on.

MAX A/C button
Pressing the MAX A/C button raises the basic ventilation level to 100 %.
