General
The Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) encompasses the entertainment, communication and information system in the vehicle. The COMAND controller unit encompasses the following subfunctions:
^ Voice control via voice control system (VCS [SBS])
^ TV mode
^ Navigation mode
^ Communication mode
^ Audio mode
^ Video mode
^ Electronic Toll Collection system (ETC)
The displays and menu presentations for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the COMAND controller unit. Relevant displays are also shown in the instrument cluster (A1).
Operating instructions
COMAND can be operated using the following components:
^ Buttons on the COMAND controller unit
^ Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
^ Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
Networking
The COMAND controller unit acts as a gateway. It routes the messages from the interior CAN to the telematics CAN components and thus forms the communications interface ("master control unit"). COMAND consists of the following data bus systems:
^ Interior CAN
Data and information is exchanged over the interior CAN between the COMAND controller unit, instrument cluster, front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) and the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73).
^ Telematics CAN
Data is exchanged over the telematics CAN between the COMAND controller unit, Audio/COMAND display and the Audio/COMAND control panel.
Diagnosis
The COMAND controller unit is the diagnosis gateway. Diagnosis is performed using the Keyword 2000 protocol via the diagnostic CAN to the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module and from there via the interior CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
