Overall network
Basically, the following data bus systems are involved in the networking:
- Controller area network bus class B (interior compartment) (CAN B)
- Controller Area Network bus, class C (engine compartment) (CAN C)
- Controller Area Network bus class D (diagnosis) (CAN-D)
- Brakes CAN
- Sensor CAN
- Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

Distinguishing features
- The CAN-B is responsible for data transfers in the vehicle interior. It interconnects the different systems that can be operated by the driver or the front passenger (e.g. power windows, interior air conditioning). The CAN-B operates at a transfer rate of 83.3 kbits/s.
- CAN-C is responsible for data transfers for the drive and chassis systems. The CAN-C operates at a transfer rate of 500 kbits/s. The CAN-D is responsible for data transfer of the diagnostic data to the diagnosis tester (external) and the connection of 2 control units.
- The CAN-D operates at a transfer rate of 500 kbits/s.
- The brakes CAN connects the SBC control unit to the ESP control unit.
- The sensor CAN connects the yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensor (B24/15) to the ESP control unit.
- MOST is an optical data bus system. Here, data are transferred via fiber optic cable to the connected information, navigation, and communication components. The MOST operates with a transfer rate of 22 Mbits/s.

The CAN-B interconnects the following control units:
- Instrument cluster
- STH control unit
- PSE controller unit with combined functions
- Restraint systems control unit
- Rear SAM control unit
- Driver-side SAM control unit
- Passenger-side SAM control unit
- AAC [KLA] control and operating unit
- Left front seat adjustment control unit with memory
- Right front seat adjustment control unit with memory
- RSC [UVS] control unit
- PTS control unit
- Door control module left
- Door control module right
- Keyless Go control unit
- Overhead control panel control unit
- Lower control panel control unit
- EIS [EZS] control unit
- Steering column module
- Vehicle power supply control module
- TPM [RDK] control unit
- Central gateway control unit
- Audio gateway control unit
- DC/DC converter control unit
- E-call control unit (A35/8) ((J) with CODE (349) E-Call emergency call system (USA) up to 30.6.04 with CODE (349) E-Call emergency call system)

The CAN-C interconnects the following control units:
- Instrument cluster
- DTR controller unit ME-SFI [ME] control unit
- ETC [EGS] control unit
- Electronic selector lever module control unit
- Automated manual transmission control unit (N15/6) (with transmission 716)
- ESP control unit
- ABC control unit
- EIS [EZS] control unit
- Steering column module
- Central gateway control unit
- Fully integrated transmission control (VGS) control unit

CAN-D interconnects the following control units:
- Central gateway control unit
- Emergency call system control unit

The brakes CAN interconnects the following control units:
- SBC control unit
- ESP control unit

The sensor CAN interconnects the following control units:
- Turn rate and lateral acceleration sensor
- ESP control unit

The MOST interconnects the following control units:
- CD player with changer
- TV tuner (MOST)
- Sound amplifier
- Voice control system control unit
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Navigation processor
- SDAR control unit
- Audio gateway control unit
- UPCI control unit

Data transfer between the bus systems
The following control units form the interface between the bus systems:
The central gateway control unit connects CAN-B, CAN-C, and CAN-D.
The audio gateway control unit connects CAN-B and MOST.
The ESP control unit connects the brakes CAN and the sensor CAN to CAN-C.

The instrument cluster and the steering column module are linked to both the CAN-B and the CAN-C, but are not used as an interface (gateway) between the two data bus systems. Depending on the task, they send the required data via the respective data bus. The EIS [EZS] control unit is also a CAN-B and CAN-C participant, but with a limited gateway function. Only information in the drive authorization system stage 3 (FBS 3) utilization range is routed.
