Activating navigation
If the driver's door is opened the navigation is activated automatically via the controller area network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B). When a Digital Versatile Disk (DVD) is inserted, this procedure may be accompanied by slightly audible noise from the DVD ROM disk drive integrated into the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) remains switched off. If thereupon no status change occurs at the EIS control unit (N73), the navigation system remains activated for t = 30 min.
Activation of entire system
All other subsystems are activated when the transmitter key (A8/1) is inserted into the EIS control unit (N73) in position 0 (circuit 15C). The display is switched on in position 1 (circuit 1 5R ON) of the transmitter key (A8/1).
The display however, is not switched on if the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) was switched off before the last removal of the transmitter key (A8/1).
If the display is switched on, the basic menu of the system that was last active (e.g. radio tuner) is displayed. If the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) was switched off for more than 30 min., a message appears with general information about how to use the system.
Conduct when pushing "ON" button
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) can also be switched on when the transmitter key (A8/1) is removed by pressing the "ON" button. All functions are then available for t = 30 minutes
When 30 min. has elapsed, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) switches itself off automatically. If the system has switched itself off after t = 30 min., the system can be switched on again by pressing the "ON" button.
Following the last navigation step (destination reached), the position map is shown again on the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
Switch off characteristics
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is switched off when the transmitter key (A8/1) is removed (circuit 15C OFF). The navigation system run-on time of t = 30 min. then starts (standby mode). During this run-on time, all the important positioning parameters are stored. The audio system's run-on time can be configured; this is done ex-factory during the installation of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). Moreover the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is always in "standby" when CAN-B is active.
Switch off characteristics at undervoltage
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) constantly monitors battery voltage. Depending on the voltage value the system will act as follows:
If the battery voltage drops below 11.5 volts (battery warning range), a message appears on the display which requests the engine to be started. If the engine is not started, a further message follows after 3 min. that only 10 seconds remain to start the engine before the system switches off. In this case switching on the engine prevents the system from being automatically shut down. However, if the system has switched off and the voltage rises again above 11.5 V, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) does not automatically switch on again.
If a system has been shut down it can still be switched back on again manually. The warning procedure then ensues for as long as the fault is not eliminated.
Battery voltage below 9.5 V (undervoltage)
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is automatically put into a defined standby condition, in which only the battery voltage continues to be monitored. In addition to this the current operating status is stored. The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) cannot be operated or accessed using STAR DIAGNOSIS when it is in this condition. Communication with external components does not take place.
Exceptions to switch-off behavior (run-on mode) if destination not reached:
^ Up to t = 30 min., the navigation system remains active (e.g. during stop for refueling). The navigation continues once the vehicle is restarted
^ After t = 30 min. up to max. 2 hrs., the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) remains in "sleep mode". The route is calculated again after the vehicle is restarted and navigation continued
^ After t = 2 hrs., a query is displayed when the vehicle is restarted asking if the route is to be calculated again
"YES" = Route is calculated again
"NO" = Navigation will cease.
