Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair

Replacing Radial Sealing Ring On Drive Pinion (Rear Axle Center Assembly Installed)

Removing, Installing

DANGER:
- Risk of fatal accident if the vehicle slips off the lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of injury with trapped or crushed body parts, risk of injury to skin and eyes from brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system.
- Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.

CAUTION:
- When working on the rear axle, take care to avoid leaving scratches, cracks or notches in the surfaces of any aluminum components. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be reduced.
- See notes on AIRmatic
- See notes on self-locking bolts and nuts

1 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS
2 Empty left and right rear air springs using STAR DIAGNOSIS
- With Airmatic, code (489a)

CAUTION: Installation: Always fill the rear air springs in the KO position otherwise they will be irreparably damaged!

3 Detach propeller shaft (106) from rear axle center assembly (50)

NOTE: The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft.

4 Loosen fitted sleeves of flexible couplings on flange
5 Unscrew bolts for propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a) and remove rear section of propeller shaft (106)

NOTE: Installation: Assemble the propeller shaft in the correct position. Tighten flexible coupling on rear axle center assembly before tightening bolts on propeller shaft intermediate bearing.

6 Drain oil from rear axle center assembly
7 Remove left and right rear axle shafts

CAUTION: Installation: Replace locking rings (37o) on inner splined profiles.

Measuring
8 Measure and note total friction torque of drive pinion
9 Slacken and unscrew hexagon collared nut (40)

NOTE:
- Do not remove the collar protection when slackening the hexagon collared nut.
- To improve control when slackening the hexagon collared nut, press the shop-made bush into the commercially available socket wrench bit.

CAUTION: Installation:
- Replace hexagon collared nut and tighten in stages until the friction torque previously measured is achieved.
- Observe minimum tightening torque, if necessary. If tightening torque is not achieved, Replace rear axle center assembly.
- Secure hexagon collared nut on drive pinion joint flange.

10 Pull off joint flange (41)

NOTE: Use puller if necessary.

11 Lever radial sealing ring (42) out of rear axle center assembly (50) using a suitable tool

CAUTION: Installation: Replace radial sealing ring, coat sealing lip with universal hypoid gear oil and press into rear axle center assembly using drift.

12 Install in the reverse order
13 Check rear axle center assembly oil level and correct if necessary
14 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS
15 Use STAR DIAGNOSIS to move brake pads toward brake discs.
