Moving off, function
When the engine has been started, the shift mode is selected and, if manual mode is chosen, the shift lever is used to select the desired gear.
This is done by:
^ Tapping the shift lever towards "A" (autoshift mode) (Model 208)
^ Tapping the shift lever towards "A/M" (Autoshift/Manual mode) (mode 203, 209, 211, 230)
^ Tapping the shift lever towards "+" (upshift)
^ Tapping the shift lever towards "-" (downshift)
^ Moving the shift lever to "R" (reverse gear)
Note
^ Reverse gear is only permitted when the vehicle is stationary or traveling at very low speed (v < 5 km/h).
^ In autoshift mode the system automatically engages 1st gear.
Caution:
When the service and parking brakes are released the vehicle starts to move automatically according to the amount of air drag and rolling resistance. By providing the response of an automatic, this function eases low speed parking and maneuvering. The "crawl sequence" is terminated immediately if the service or parking brake is applied.
Actuation of the accelerator pedal is interpreted as a request from the driver to start the vehicle moving. The automated manual transmission control unit (N15/6) calculates the necessary clutch moment in relation to engine speed. In doing so it also takes into account wear, noise and the response behavior of the clutch. According to this calculated data, the clutch is closed via the connecting elements (hydraulic controller unit, hydraulic connecting line and hydraulic central clutch operator), and the vehicle starts to move.
Stopping, function
When the vehicle is coasting to a stop, e.g. at traffic signals, the automated manual transmission control unit (N15/6) detects the low engine speed and downshifts automatically to the most suitable gear.
If the vehicle is accelerated again in manual shift mode and the maximum engine speed is reached, it shifts automatically to the next gear up.
In automatic shift mode the upshift to the next gear during acceleration occurs according to the shift characteristic stored in the automated manual transmission control unit (N15/6).
