Air Spring: Service and Repair
AR32.22-P-1500T Remove/Install Rear Air Spring
- with CODE (489) AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension)
Part 1:
Part 2:
Remove/Install
CAUTION:
- The air spring may only be removed together with the additional volume reservoir. The connecting hose from the air spring to the additional volume reservoir must not be disconnected otherwise leakage will occur. Furthermore, it should be ensured that before removal the air springs are emptied completely using STAR DIAGNOSIS. If the air springs are not installed and filled in accordance with the specifications, they can be damaged in advance and fail a short time afterwards.
- See notes on AIRmatic
- See notes on self-locking nuts and screws
1 Remove rear axle
2 Disconnect pressure line (1) from air spring (2)
NOTE:
- Installation: If a new air spring (2) is installed, detach the screw connection on the pressure line (1); to do this, break open the clamping ring, pull off bolt head and insert the pressure line up to the marking on the connection of the new air spring (2). Pull back the compressed-air briefly so that the circular retaining edges inside the clamping ring engage in the outer surface of the line.
- Seal off pressure line with blind plugs during repair work.
- If pressure line connections or pressure lines are damaged, repair AIRmatic pressure line connection.
3 Disconnect the electrical connector (12) from the rear axle level sensor (B22/3) and detach the rear axle level sensor (B22/3) from the rear axle carrier (6)
4 Detach torsion bar (5) from rear axle carrier (6)
5 Unscrew bolts (7) of additional volume reservoir (8) from front center assembly mounting (9)
6 Detach air spring (2) from spring link (10) and remove air spring (2) together with additional volume reservoir (8)
CAUTION: Do not twist the air spring as this produces creases in the air bellows which will result in failure at a later date.
NOTE: Installation: If the old air spring is reused, any fragments of the broken retaining clip (11) must be removed from the air spring and replace retaining clip (11).
- Tighten threaded connection between air spring and spring link in the KO position with the rear axle installed.
- Fill air spring in the KO position.
Inspect
7 Check condition of air spring
8 Reverse the removal sequence to install.
