DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of injury Body parts may become jammed or crushed. Risk of injury Skin and eyes may be injured due to brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system
- Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
- Risk of poisoning from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury from brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes.
- Pour brake fluid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.
- Risk of injury to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning from swallowing hydraulic fluid.
- Release the pressure in the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses.
CAUTION:
- Before opening the hydraulic circuit of the rack-and-pinion steering, thoroughly clean the surrounding area of the separation point. Even the smallest particles of dirt, introduced into the hydraulic component, can lead to malfunctions of the rack-and-pinion steering
- Before opening the SBC system, thoroughly clean the surrounding area of the separation point. Even the smallest particles of dirt, introduced into the hydraulic components, can result in malfunctions and a total failure of the SBC system
- When carrying out service and repair operations on the front-end assembly, always take great care to prevent leaving scratches, notches or fissures in the aluminum components. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected
- See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
- See Special information on AIRmatic
NOTE: Installation: Tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components only in curb condition.
1 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
2 Discharge front suspension struts using STAR DIAGNOSIS
- Airmatic code (489a)
3 Move front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel.
CAUTION:
- With a disengaged steering coupling (9) the steering wheel should not be turned because the clock spring contact will be destroyed.
- On vehicles with easy entry/exit, this function must be disabled to prevent damaging the windshield, refer to Operating instructions.
4.1 Remove trim panel for cylinder head cover and for charge air distribution pipe
- Model 211.004/006/206/016/216/026/226
4.2 Remove air cleaner housing with air ducts
- Model 211.061/261/065/265/070/270
NOTE:
- Pull air cleaner housing vertically upwards off the rubber retainers on the cylinder head covers.
- Installation: Smear retaining rubbers on the cylinder head cover and seal of the hot film mass air flow sensor in the air cleaner housing with lubricant.
5 Mount engine supporting frame and secure engine.
6 Extract the hydraulic fluid from the power steering pump's reservoir
7 Remove the front wheels.
8 Install guard plates for brake caliper dust shields
9 Remove left and right front rpm sensors (L6/1, L6/2) from steering knuckles (5) and hang to one side
- Except Airmatic code (489a)
NOTE: For this purpose, unscrew bolts (6a) and unclip electric feed lines of the left and right front rpm sensors (L6/1, L6/2) from the retaining clamps.
CAUTION: Installation: Correct installation position must be noted, the chafe protection (5a) must be screwed onto the front left and right rpm sensors (L6/1, L6/2) as shown. It must not be installed between the left or right front rpm sensor (L6/1, L6/2) and the steering knuckle (5).
10 Unplug front left and right brake pad contact sensors (S10/1, S10/2) at connector
- Except Airmatic code (489a)
11 Detach electrical feed line (10a) of the front left and right brake pad contact sensors (S10/1, S10/2) from floating brake calipers
- Except Airmatic code (489a)
12 Disconnect front brake hoses (51) from brake lines (52).
CAUTION:
- Seal off brake line (52) immediately with plugs. The brake fluid reservoir must not run empty.
- See notes on handling brake fluid
- See notes on installing brake hoses
NOTE: When loosening or tightening the brake line (52) on the brake hose (51), take care not to twist the bracket.51 Use an open wrench to counterhold at the two flats of the brake hose (51)
13 Remove front suspension struts (7).
- Except Airmatic code (489a)
14 Unplug electrical connectors of front left and right brake pad contact sensors (S10/1, S10/2) and front left and right rpm sensors (L6/1, L6/2)
- Airmatic code (489a)
15 Detach upper wishbone (8) from front end
16.1 Remove bottom section of soundproofing capsule
NOTE: Installation: do not install bottom part of noise encapsulation until after rack-and-pinion steering has been checked for leaks.
16.2 Remove engine compartment paneling
NOTE: Installation: Install the engine compartment paneling only after all operations have been completed.
17 Pull steering coupling (9) off rack-and-pinion steering (10).
18 Detach left and right engine mounts (11) from front axle carrier (1)
- Model 211.004/006/206/016/216/026/226
