The DVD or CD player mode is introduced in the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) in the "Audio" menu. Using the function keys (hard keys) the audio source desired by the user can be selected here. The CDs can be played via the DVD disk drive or with the CD changer (A2/6). The CD changer (A2/6) is located in the center console compartment below the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). After inserting an Audio CD into the slot of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) or the CD changer (A2/6) for instance the user can select the following functions:
^ selection of the CD slot
^ CD selection
^ track selection
^ Music search, forwards/backwards
^ Current playing time (of the track or the CD)

The menu in the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) can be used to adjust the following:
^ CD audio functions
Display of current track number and current playing time elapsed
^ Scan function
The music tracks are played for 8 seconds. At the end of the CD the CD changer (A2/6) automatically changes into play forward mode or into the mode last set.
^ Random function
All tracks on a CD are played according to the random principle. If all the tracks of a CD have been played once, the next CD is loaded automatically and the random function continues until it is deactivated.
^ Repeat function
Repeat of a track, a CD or CD magazine

There are the following options in the "Settings" menu:
^ Normal track function
^ Repeat track
^ Repeat CD
^ Select track mix

Only 12 cm CDs may be inserted into the CD changer (A2/6), and no 8 cm CD adapters can be used. Up to 6 CDs can be loaded.

The multistandard drive integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is capable of reading both audio and MP3 CDs as well as CD ROMs and DVDs.

Navigation is not possible during CD audio mode, CD video and DVD video mode.

The control signals of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and the audio data of the CD changer (A2/6) are transmitted via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). The audio gateway control module (N93/1) takes over the signal processing and amplification.

CD title allocation function
Every CD has a permanently stored, so-called TOC (Table of Contents) entry. As a result, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) recognizes a particular CD and can name it automatically after the title has been assigned once by the user (even when the CD is then inserted into a different CD magazine. In addition the TOC entry contains information on the number of tracks on a CD and the total playing time.

Play DVD video/audio and CD video/audio
The disk drive is located behind the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). With the help of kinematics, which moves the display upwards 18.5 mm, the DVD slot is readily accessible to the user. The interface is generated and displayed by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The audio signals amplified by an audio signal amplifier integrated in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1).

The DVD disk drive supports the following formats:
^ DVD video
^ DVD ROM
^ DVD audio
^ CD video
^ CD audio

Function of DVD video and video CD
^ Display of track number with the current chapter and current time elapsed.
^ Selection of tracks/previous tracks or desired chapters by pressing a button on the operating unit.
^ DVD menu Control of menu functions in DVD mode with joystick
^ Track menu
^ Submenu via soft key Subtrack switch, switch for angle adjustment, sound playback switch, STOP, pause, track search function, Go Up
^ Settings (voice setting of AUDIO/MENU) Subtrack; basic voice setting (level, password); Dolby dynamic range control (automatic vehicle interior noise adaptation)

Mini disc player (MD), function
A mini disc drive is also integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The disk drive is located behind the display. With the help of kinematics, which moves the display upwards 13.5 mm, the mini disc slot is readily accessible to the user. The interface is generated and displayed by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The audio signals amplified by an audio signal amplifier integrated in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1).
The mini disc disk drive has the Disc Auto Detect function (automatic mini disc detection) and a hard key for MD eject (eject button) is located on the housing.

The menu in the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) can be used to adjust the following: MD audio functions:
^ Display of the current track number and the current playing time elapsed.
^ Name of current mini disc and current track.
^ Scan function (track intro scan) The music tracks are played for t = 8 s.
^ Random function (RDM)
All tracks on a CD are played according to the random principle.
^ Repeat function (RPT ON/OFF)
Alternatively one track or the complete mini disc is repeated
^ Music search, forwards/backwards
^ Next or previous track selection
