Remove/Install Transmission With Torque Converter












Remove/Install

CAUTION: Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

DANGER:
- Risk of explosion from hydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury with caustic burns to eyes and skin from battery electrolyte or from handling damaged lead-acid batteries
- No fire sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid protection gloves, clothes and goggles. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers


1 Disconnect ground cable of battery


DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer


2 Raise vehicle
3 Take off bottom engine compartment panel at front and rear
4 Drain transmission oil at oil pan

CAUTION:
- If the transmission fluid is burnt or contains wear particles, the oil cooler lines and the oil cooler must be flushed out
- Installation: Install new sealing ring


5 Detach exhaust shielding plate (1) for rear engine mount from reinforcement brace
6 Remove exhaust bracket (7)

CAUTION: Installation: Check threaded plate (4), replace if necessary

7 Detach transmission ground (W49) from transfer case
8 Disconnect O2-sensor connectors from bracket (6)

NOTE: Press connectors out of retaining clamps to do this

9 Detach bracket (6) of O2-sensor connectors at bottom of oil pan
10 Remove front axle gear propeller shaft (5)
11 Disconnect plug socket (8) of electrohydraulic control unit

NOTE: To do this, detach shield above plug socket and unclip line from bracket

12 Detach shift rod (14) at rear from intermediate lever of floor shift by pressing off circlip (14a) using a suitable tool.

NOTE: Installation: ensure circlip (14a) is seated correctly

13 Detach shift rod (14) from automatic transmission by pulling off retainer.
14 Detach exhaust shielding plate (12) of steering coupling from control valve of rack-and-pinion steering

NOTE: Three screws

15 Detach exhaust shielding plate (13) of steering coupling from engine

NOTE: Two nuts

16 Unscrew bolts holding torque converter to driven plate (10) by turning torque converter to the correct position

NOTE: Remove front cap from torque converter. There are two screws in three places (10)

17 Support automatic transmission (15) using assembly lift and transmission platform
18 Remove rear engine crossmember (2) and rear engine mount
19 Dismantle front propeller shaft from transmission

NOTE:
- The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft
- Installation: Mount the front propeller shaft on the transmission

20 Loosen fitted sleeves of flexible coupling and push back propeller shaft

21 Detach bracket (11 b) of left oil line (11) from oil pan
22 Detach left oil line (11) at front from separation point (11c)

NOTE: Seal line connections.

23 Unscrew banjo bolt (11a) of left oil line (11) from automatic transmission (15)

NOTE:
- Seal line connections. Do not remove left oil line (11).
- Installation: Install new sealing rings.

24 Unscrew banjo bolt (9a) of right oil line (9) from automatic transmission (15).

NOTE:
- Seal line connections.
- Installation: Install new sealing rings.

25 Lower automatic transmission (15) slightly.
26 Unscrew bolts (15a) of automatic transmission (15).

NOTE: Installation: pay attention to different brackets.

27 Detach oil filler tube (16) on right from automatic transmission (15).

Installation: check O-ring (16a) and replace if necessary.

28 Remove automatic transmission (15) at and angle using assembly lift.

NOTE: Secure torque converter to prevent it from falling out.
29 Remove torque converter

CAUTION: Installation: Lightly grease crankshaft journals on torque converter.

30 Install in the reverse order
31 Perform basic programming
32 Read out fault memory with STAR DIAGNOSIS and erase if necessary

DANGER:
- Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury as working around the engine during start-up or while running may result in confusions and burns
- Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving off by itself.
- Wear closed and close-fitting work clothes.
- Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.


33 Inspect ATF level in automatic transmission, add ATF if necessary
