In the US vehicles of model series 203 the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) is installed as special equipment. It is used to implement current and future vehicle-specific services.
Currently supported vehicle-specific services in the US includes:
- Telematic Alarm Identification on Demand (emergency call system) (TELE AID) (incl. E911) manual/automatic
- MB information call
- Telediagnosis/Roadside Assistance
- Tracking (dynamic assignment)
- Remote Door Unlock (in case of emergency)
- Authorization
The emergency call system control unit (N123/4) is not used for regular telephone calls.
All telematics services are integrated in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) and run fully automatic. They are shown in the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and in the display of the instrument cluster (A1). Since position finding is required for the services, the navigation unit that is integrated in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) is also used. The navigation unit is a GPS receiver in the emergency call system control unit (N123/4), which renders an exact position finding possible. The vehicle's position and direction of movement is determined automatically and kept available in a history.
The navigation unit receives GPS data from the GPS antenna (A2/23).
The communication unit is basically a cellular phone that was adjusted to the American cellular mobile telephone network, which is only use to process the telematics functions. The communication unit transmits and receives data via the telephone antenna (A2/22). Prerequisites for using the services, however, is a communication module of the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) that is authorized to provide the particular service. In other words, the communication module of the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) must have been configured ex factory with the telephone number of the corresponding service provider. In a second step, the user has to become authorized in the service center via this telephone number. Authorization can already be done in part in the factory. The telematics services are activated by operating the particular buttons of the MB-Info and breakdown assistance button group (S93/6) or, in the event of a manual emergency call, by operating the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3) in the overhead control panel control unit (N70). After activation, the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) transmits an SMS to the service center. While the SMS is transmitted, a telephone connection to the service center is established immediately.
Function requirements
Any telematics service has to be authorized individually. In the event of a defect or if there is no authorization, an error message appears in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1) and in the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The system is operational as soon as circuit 30 is active.
Self-test
When circuit 15R is active, the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) performs a self-test (approx. 3.5 s). If the test was successful, the system is operational.
Basic functions
- Carrying out cyclic self-diagnosis tests
- Keeping vehicle data available and transmitting them securely in case of requirement
- Transmitting data messages (with the aid of SMS)
- Set up telephone connections in handsfree mode.
Emergency call system
In the event that the driver has an emergency in a remote area, a service technician can obtain an overview of the situation in the vehicle interior with the aid of the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) and initiate the appropriate emergency measures (automatic emergency call). It is also always possible to transmit a manual emergency call by operating the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3) in the overhead control panel control unit (N70).
The emergency call system is activated using two different methods:
- Automatically in the event of a crash (through the crash data of the supplemental restraint system (SRS))
- Manually by actuating the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3) in the overhead control panel control unit (N70)
In both cases, an emergency message is transmitted immediately to the closest emergency center.
The content of the emergency message includes:
- vehicle position, direction of travel and history
- vehicle data and crash detection (severity of the accident)
- customer data of the emergency service provider
Terminating the emergency call
Usually, the emergency service center deactivates the emergency call.
The emergency call system control unit (N123/4) terminates establishing the connection of the emergency call after 5 unsuccessful attempts.
