In addition to the low beam, the cornering illumination permits an improved illumination of the roadway in city traffic. Cornering illumination represents an additional light function which is realized with the aid of special front fog lamps (cornering illumination with integrated front fog lamp function). While driving forward, each inside corner front fog lamp is switched on. When reversing, the front fog lamp is inversely actuated.
Function requirements for driving forward and standstill without reverse gear engaged:
- Circuit 61 ON
- Rotary light switch in AUTO position, low beam "ON" or daytime running lights active
- Low beam request from rain/light sensor (B38/2) (darkness detected)
- Speed < 40 km/h
Function requirements for reversing and standstill with engaged reverse gear:
- Circuit 61 ON
- Rotary light switch in AUTO position, low beam "ON" or daytime running lights active
- Low beam request from rain/light sensor (B38/2) (darkness detected)
- Speed < 40 km/h
- Reverse gear engaged (signal generated by central gateway control unit (N93))
Dependency on steering angle sensor (N49), turn signal indicator and vehicle speed
Only one cornering illumination lamp is actuated at a time. If the request for right is present at the steering angle sensor (N49), at the turn signal indicator or at both, then the right front fog lamp (E5/2) is actuated. If the request for left is present at the steering angle sensor (N49), at the turn signal indicator or at both, then the left front fog lamp (E5/1) is actuated. The cornering illumination lamp remains active for as long as the function requirements exist. The turn signal indicator has priority over the steering angle sensor (N49) (exception: reverse gear is engaged). The cornering illumination function is activated, both when switching on or off, by means of a delayed dimmer ramp. The cornering illumination lamps are switched on and off by the respective separately adjustable dimmer ramps. If the circuit status changes from "circuit 15 ON" to "circuit 15 OFF", they are switched off immediately with dimming. With the reverse gear engaged, the function of the lights is inverted, i.e. if the request for right is present at the steering angle sensor (N49), at the turn signal indicator or at both, then the left front fog lamp (E5/1) is actuated.
If the request for left is present at the steering angle sensor (N49), at the turn signal indicator or at both, then the right front fog lamp (E5/2) is actuated when reverse gear is engaged. Only one cornering illumination lamp is actuated at a time, unless the parameterization has been changed to "Parking illumination Max" (in this case both cornering illumination lamps are then actuated). In order to avoid any brief lighting of the cornering illumination lamps when the selector lever is moved from "P" to "D" (via "R"), the message from the EIS control unit (N73) is filtered out for t = 500 ms. A parameter is provided, which is responsible for a minimum switch-on period of the lamps at below 40 km/h (one-touch turn signaling, parking, reverse travel). The minimum switch-on period starts with the cancel condition of the function. For the switch-on and off operation, a small offset is programmed, which prevents the cornering illumination lamps from flickering when driving at the threshold of 40 km/h.
If the lamp has been switched off using the light switch module (S1) and if the rotary light switch (S1s1) is then set back to "AUTO" or "Manual driving lamp" position, then the cornering illumination lamps are only switched on again if the turn signal indicator, the steering angle sensor (N49) or both permit this in terms of their parameters.
In the following operating conditions, the lamps will be switched off immediately without dimming:
- Diagnosis
- Activation of hazard warning flasher
- Rotary light switch (S1s1) in position "0"
