Water Ingress in Area Below Bottom Rear Window Seal
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles regarding water ingress in the area below the bottom rear window seal (Figure 1, arrow), this may be due to the seal coming loose (Figure 2) from the rear window. A new seal with a new part number is now available which omits the self adhesive feature of the previous seal. To resolve, perform the following.
1. Protect the trunk in the repair area to prevent soiling the trunk panels.
2. Move Vario Roof to intermediate or repair position. With the ignition switch left on, the roof will remain in this position for approximately 15 minutes before moving. A chime will sound as an alert that the roof will soon start to move. Cycling the key will allow the roof to remain in this position for approximately an additional 15 minutes.
3. Remove nuts at bottom of rear window frame.
4. Loosen seal (Figure 3, 1) using the cleaner specified and remove from rear window with a wedge. The adjacent seals on the C-pillar must not be allowed to come in contact with the cleaner when cleaning the window frame as this will damage the low friction coating on these seals. Mask off the adjacent seals before starting.
5. Clean rear window frame using cleaner specified. Wait for cleaner to completely flash off before installing the new seal.
6. Prepare new seal (Figure 3, 1): Attach sealing strip (Figure 3, 2) and sealing profile (Figure 3, 3) as shown on the new seal (Figure 3, 1). Do not touch sealing strip and sealing profile in the adhesive areas with your fingers as this can result in a leak at this point.
7. Pull protective film (Figure 3, 4) on one side of the seal (Figure 3, 1) off the sealing strip (Figure 3, over a length of a few centimeters.
8. Fit seal (Figure 3, 1) with threaded studs on left and right rear window frame and screw on nuts loosely, do not tighten.
9. Slowly pull remaining protective film (Figure 3, 4) off sealing strip (Figure 3, 2) in short increments while aligning the seal (Figure 3, 1) on the rear window frame.
10. Smooth seal (Figure 3, 1) from one end to the other end using your hand.
11. Tighten nuts to 2.5 Nm. Over tightening may damage the seal and result in leaks.
12. Close Vario Roof but leave trunk lid in assembly or repair position.
13. Roll down seal evenly on rear window frame, use roller W171 589 06 63 00.
14. Check adhesion of sealing strip (Figure 3, 2) between seal (Figure 3, 1) and rear window frame, roll down again if necessary.
15. Close trunk lid. 16. Perform rain test.
