Tailgate Does Not Open Fully In Cold Weather

If you receive customer reports in the above vehicles of the tailgate not opening fully in cold weather, do not replace the struts. This is due to the opening force of the gas pressurized struts being insufficient to overcome the kinematic load at cold temperatures. If the customer does not accept this explanation, install both pressurized struts (Figure 1, 1) per WIS document AR72.20-P-3600T. The intermediate stop function for the tailgate will no longer be available.

Note:
The intermediate stop function has been eliminated from all cars as of March 2004 production.
