Procedure
ProcedureNote:
Check fuel tank level in the event fuel filter module assembly requires replacement.
A. Inspect fuel filter module assembly
1. Check fuel filter module assembly part number:
^ Remove rear seat:
- Model 211: WIS AR91.12-P-1020T
- Model 219: WIS AR91.12-P-1020TX
^ Roll-up sound insulation mat (1, Figure 1) to uncover access cover (2).
^ Remove 6 bolts (3) securing left access cover (2) to body then remove access cover (2).
^ If part number A 211 470 49 94 or A 211 470 51 94 is indicated on fuel filter module assembly (arrow, Figure 2), proceed to subject D.
^ If part number A 211 470 49 94 or A 211 470 51 94 is not indicated on fuel filter module assembly (arrow), proceed to step 2. proceed to step 2.
2. Check fuel filter module assembly fitting for fuel leakage:
^ If fuel is not leaking from fitting (A, Figure 2) proceed to Subject B.
^ If fuel is leaking from fitting (A) proceed to step Subject C.
B. Install new sleeve into fuel filter module assembly fitting
1. Remove fuel hose (A, Figure 3) from fitting (B):
^ Remove hose clamp (arrow) securing fuel hose (A) to fitting (B).
^ Wrap a shop rag around fuel hose (A, Figure 3) then remove fuel hose (A) by first turning hose (to loosen it from fitting) then pull hose off from fitting (B).
CAUTION!
^ Ensure shop rag is wrapped around fuel hose to prevent fuel from leaking into vehicle's interior (a small amount of fuel release is normal).
^ DO NOT pull fuel hose (A) off from fitting (B) without first turning and loosening hose (A), or damage may occur to fitting (B).
2. Remove sleeve from inside of fuel filter module assembly fitting (A, Figure 4):
^ Manually thread a body screw (arrow) into fitting (A) then tighten slightly using a wrench.
Note:
Body metal screw (arrow) dimensions: e.g., 4.8 X 19 mm.
CAUTION!
DO NOT over tighten sheet metal screw (arrow) or damage to fitting may occur.
^ Remove sleeve from fitting (A) by pulling screw (arrow) along with sleeve out from fitting (A) using pliers.
3. Install new sleeve (arrow, Figure 5) into fuel filter module assembly fitting (A):
^ Pad jaws of slip joint pliers with masking tape to protect components during installation.
^ Insert smaller end of new sleeve (arrow) into fitting (A) first.
^ Press sleeve (arrow) into fitting (A) using slip joint pliers until sleeve is seated.
CAUTION!
Sleeve (arrow) should press into fitting (A) with slight resistance. Ensure that sleeve is evenly started into fitting (A) before increasing pressure on pliers or damage to fitting may occur.
^ Stop applying pressure on pliers once sleeve (arrow) is seated (B).
4. Reinstall components in reverse order.
CAUTION!
Use only specified hose clamp to secure fuel hose to fuel level sensor fitting or fuel leakage may occur.
^ DO NOT use worm gear/screw type fuel clamps.
C. Replace fuel filter module assembly (located on left side of fuel tank)
Note:
If fuel tank level is above 3/4 (full) drain fuel tank down to 3/4 (full).
^ Disconnect battery cable from negative battery terminal.
1. Replace fuel filter module assembly, refer to WIS: AR47.10-P-7000TK.
Note (regarding WIS instructions):
^ "Saugmaster" fuel container listed in referenced WIS instructions: AR47.10-P-4001TB is not available in the US. Use only approved fuel extraction tank when removing fuel from a vehicle. Approved fuel extraction equipment can be obtained through the Mercedes-Benz Standard Service Equipment Program (SSEP) by calling (888) 458-4040.
^ In order to gain access to fuel filter module assembly hoses (1 Figure 6) and electrical connector (2), it is necessary to gain access to fuel pump module assembly in the right side of fuel tank (located under right fuel tank access cover [3]).
2. Reassemble in reverse order.
3. Perform basic programming, refer to WIS for model:
^ 211: AR00.19-P-0200T.
^ 219: AR00.19-P-0200TX.
4. Connect SDS, Perform Quick Test, read out and erase fault memory.
D. Complete vehicle emissions information
1. Fill out Repair Label and affix on underside of hood next to existing emissions labels (as shown in Figure 7).
Note:
^ Ensure the surface is clean prior to affixing the label.
^ Use a ball point pen to fill in the label; do not use a marker or felt tip pen.
^ Campaign is now complete except for California dealers.
^ California dealers only, please proceed to next step.
2. California dealers only: Print Proof of Correction form shown above and fill out as shown in Figure 8.
Note:
The Proof of Correction form can also be found on STAR TekInfo under the "Forms and Test Sheets > Other Forms" heading.
^ Scan form and keep a copy for dealer records.
^ Hand the form to customer or place in glove glove box.
