Wind Noise

This bulletin is intended to assist in finding an effective solution to the complex topic of customer reports about "wind noise".

NOTE: The four critical points are to be referenced in the following procedures:

I. Wind noise from outside rearview mirror on left and/or right front door

II. Wind noise in the area of the roof frame seal

III. Wind noise in the area of the rear side window bar seal

IV. Wind noise from the drive and front passenger doors

There are four critical points where this complaint can arise (Figure 1):

1. At the mirror triangle (1-Figure 1)

2. Across the entire length of the roof frame seal (2-Figure 1)

3. At the rear side window bar seal towards the driver's door window (3-Figure 1)

4. Gap from door to rear fender (4-Figure 1)

NOTE: For each wind noise complaint received, comparisons should be made using a reference vehicle.

I.Wind noise from outside mirror on left and/or right front door

Cause: External roof frame sealing lip (1-Figure 2) gets pinched when closing the door.

1. Pull roof frame seal upwards.
- The external roof frame sealing lip (1-Figure 2) should not contact the mirror triangle cover (2-Figure 2) when closing the door.

II.Wind noise in the area of the roof frame seal

Cause: Incorrectly adjusted side windows may damage the roof frame seal or cause wind noises.
1. Inspect roof frame seal for damage, replace if necessary.
Refer to WIS-document: Remove/install seal section at roof frame (AR88.85-P-2000N).
- The new roof frame seal must be at least quality status 13 (labeling on rear of roof frame seal).
- Roof frame seals must always be replaced in pairs (left and right).

2. Close the door and move the door window (2-Figure 3) into top end stop position.

3. Check the penetration depth of the door window (2-Figure 3) into the roof frame seal (1-Figure 3).

- Use a wax pencil or the like to trace the position of the lower edge of the roof frame sealing lip along its entire length across the door window.

- The penetration depth (a-Figure 3) should be 5...7 mm over the entire length. If the penetration depth is not within this range refer to WIS-document:
Adjust front door window (AR72.10-P-1950N).

4. Close rear side window (3-Figure 3) completely.

5. Check the penetration depth of the rear side window (3-Figure 3) into the roof frame seal (1-Figure 3).

- Use a wax pencil or the like to trace the position of the lower edge of the roof frame sealing lip along its entire length across the rear side window.

- The penetration depth (a-Figure 3) should be 6...8 mm over the entire length. If the penetration depth is not within this range refer to WIS-document:
Adjusting rear side windows (AR67.30-P-4200N).

6. Check transitions and gap from crank window in driver's door to rear side window, adjust if necessary.

- For this purpose remove molding from rear fender. Correct inclination above rear adjustment screw with Socket wrench.

7. Check short stroke position of rear side windows (3-Figure 3).

- Dimension (c-Figure 3) between the lower edge of the roof frame sealing lip (1-Figure 3) and the upper edge of the rear side window (inner window) must not exceed 4 mm.

- In the event of deviations, adjust the rear control unit settings using Star Diagnosis. Enter via "Control unit adjustment of rear control unit RCU 215".

III.Wind noise in the area of the rear side window bar seal

Cause: Damaged bar seals can cause wind noises.

1. Remove bar seal.

2. Check whether window radius area is filled with sealing compound (2-Figure 4) in area of bar seal (1-Figure 4).

- If sealant is present, skip to step 4.

3. Fill radius area of window at bar seal (1-Figure 4) with Terostat sealant (2-Figure 4).

4. Check bar seal (1-Figure 4) for damage or wear and replace bar seal if necessary.

- New bar seal must correspond to at least quality level 12 (labeling on rear of bar seal).

5. Install bar seal.

6. Check adjustment of the rear side window and correct as required.
Refer to WIS-document: Adjusting rear side windows (AR67.30-P-4200N).

IV.Wind noises at driver and passenger doors

Cause 1: Wind noises at door handle can be heard in passenger compartment.
- Only up to VIN 018067

1. Remove door liner on front door. Refer to WIS document AR72.10-P-1000N.

2. Remove inner and outer shaft seal.

3. Position shaped foam block (1-Figure 5) into rear upper door corner from bottom.

4. Install in the reverse order.

Cause 2: Foam seal too small on rear side window.

- Only up to VIN 004263

1. Remove rear side window glass. Refer to WIS-document AR67.30-P-4000N.

2. Replace foam seal (2-Figure 5).

3. Install in the reverse order.
